I just found this story, aout 1 blokes experiences in a past time of Australia's history, Sorry but I have become obsessed with the 380th Bomb Group history of their stay here in the NT and just had to share this unbelievable story with any that might have an interest . I hope it passes the moderators approval, It's stories like this that can get people motivated to fire up the 4x4, hook the van on and go see for them selves where these brave Men and Women performed unbelievable tasks .
At the bottom it has 6 parts to read

Thanks Doug,
Managed to make a trip to NT in August.
Had read some history of WWII, and the NT, but it has always been a bit misleading as to the significance.
Being there, even for a little while, helped in understanding.
And when you drive down the highway, with those brown signs, this that way and something else in another direction, it makes you realise how big the build up was.
Trying to remember, how many Japanese planes were shot down over Aussie terra firma, 68 or something? Over an 18 month period?
And history isn't taught in schools any more!
So keep it coming. Enjoy every one. Good background to a trip.

At this time I'm not sure how many were downed but your number reflects more like the number of raids.

Thanks,
That lists 64 raids on "Darwin", and about 82 raids in total on the NT.
Trying to remember where I saw the information board that mentioned the number of Japanese planes shot down.
Most probably come to me about 2am tomorrow, and the wife will wonder why I stirred.

Like that stuff Doug.
My father in law was up there then digging foxholes before he got his wings, and this is how he first really got to believe there was a war on.
After a 2 week long train trip up from
melbourne they were posted some tens of Km south of
darwin , all they did was dig foxholes all day on a forgotten backwater
airstrip and wave to the odd plane which they could see in the distance as it approached
Darwin.
Waving at the odd plane relieved the boredom apparently.
One day they saw a whole stack of planes on the horizon heading for
darwin and they all began to wave and were happy that more support was on the way , and maybe some supplies as they only
had 1 rifle per three soldiers and 3 rounds for that rifle.
Anyway , waving away madly trying to attract attention and an officer came up, turned white when he saw the formation , and said to the diggers, "Dig like Hell, boys, we don't have that many planes in our whole air force".
