Gramps (NSW)
So, where are we now?
Does this only apply to access to Aboriginal communities, specifically townships, or does it apply to Aboriginal lands surrounding them as
well ?

Gramps i think it is a good idea that we don't need the permits,it now gives us the rights to choose if we want to travel to those communities or not.Feedom of choice.
Cheers Bob.

With just two senators siding against the Bill along with the Opposition, it could go back to the House of Reps for reworking and negotiation, before going to the Senate again.
Should this happen then it's unlikely (but not impossible) to be blocked a second time.
In any case, it only applies to those aboriginal lands and conmmunities that the Federal Govt has direct responsibility for i.e. NT Lands.

I think we may be missing the point here. The argument only relates to "communities". The lands and roads around them are still governed by the permit situation. A bit ironic that you can enter the town but you still need permission to get there.
The other point to remember is it only relates to the NT at this point in time. WA and SA still have restrictions.

So does this mean Arhnem Land is still off limits unless you have a permit?

I would imagine so. I wouldn't be crossing any aboriginal land unless I had the permissions in place. I'd be checking with the relevant Aboriginal lands councils.
Cheers Mick
