We recently stayed at a caravan park site, in the rain, and were shocked to see cigarette butts appearing out of the grass. It would seem that ,even if the butts are stubbed out, they swell and reappear in the rain.I picked up 64.I'm sure all campers would appreciate it if butts were disposed of in the bins .

As one of the filthy brigade (smokers), I find it reprehensible that my fellow smokers seem to think they have some right to to throw their butts anywhere they like.

Cig butts are as much rubbish as drink cans or left over newspapers. Why can't these dills bin them? I am amazed at how many butts are stomped out within a few feet of a rubbish bin.

Jim.

Jim, I have walked in Melbourne from time to time and see people standing in doorways and the just dropping the butts under a foot. City doorways are litter areas like cats leave.

John,
As a caravan park owner I can only concur with you. It is most embarrassing to show a customer to a caravan or camp site and find that it is littered with butts.
If I told you that we pick up at least 100 a day most people would think I was exaggerating. But I can assure that I am not.
As expected, most smokers do the right thing. To those who don't, give us a go, despite what you may think we do have other things to do. Like keep the pool clean for you.

Its a sad fact that most smokers don't see throwing a smoke out the window as littering. Or the ones who smoke outside city buildings and butt their cigarettes out with their shoe and just go back inside.

Got to be the filthiest habit their is.

My solution $50 first offence, $500 for a second offence and so on.

That particular practice is credited as starting a raging fire that ripped through several crops and houses near Junee a couple of years ago. It should be a much bigger fine IMHO.

Smokers outside buildings.......Don't I just hate that and the fact that I (and many others) have to walk through them to get to the footpath.

I am a non smoker, never smoked in my life BUT I have Emphysema...a legacy left me by my extremely heavy smoking mother. So I have a health issue with people smoking in my presence and trying to navigate a path through to the footpath is somewhat hazardous.

So there is more to smokers outside building then just the butts..

If I see someone throw a butt, I tell them...we all should do the same. I was stopped at the lights the other day and saw a lit bumper come out of the drivers window in front of me...I got out, picked it up and handed it back to the stunned driver. I received a heap of car horns for my effort.

I do it all the time when I see someone throw a bumper...

I HATE 'EM

Dunco,

I agree with your actions, but would be wary where you could finish up, possibly attracting a smack in the lug.

"Bumpers" as you called dicarded smokes , in my younger days, were cigs that were made from tobacco from spent cigarettes that was rolled up and recycled to make a smoke.

Regards Nick

As an ex smoker I agree with all those saying it's a filthy habit and I was probably as thoughtless as other smokers are now. It's the cause of many fires and here in WA during the Summer it's not unusual for smouldering fires to be seen on the centre reservation approaches to traffic lights obviously from fag butts.
Give it up before it's too late smokers, although it's well over 30 years since I did I'm now suffering from lung disease probably from too many fags long ago.
Younger bro is the same, stuffed lungs with Emphysema (sp?) and our old man died at 52 because of it.
And we still never learnt!
Alan.

All smokers should be forced to take their anti-social, selfish and intrusive habit outside the park all together.

They can stand on the footpath along with their mates at the pubs and clubs.

If smokers find this offensive, sorry, too bad, I find smoking offensive in places like caravan parks and camping areas.

Maybe caravan parks need to start banning smokers like hotels and clubs

That would be great for we non smokers....but not so good for their business.

Perhaps provide a room or similar....maybe put a levy on smokers and use the monies to pay someone to clean up afterwards.

It is all food for thought.......

on a recent visit to fraser island i had the kids going around our campsite picking up the glow sticks they had left lying around on the ground. also decided was a good time to get them cleaning up ciggie butts left by previous campers, after 5 minutes i gave up on the ciggie butts cause we would have been there all day and half of the next i reckon.

I know people that use their own gardens/potplants/yards as ashtrays. If they do it at home, what hope of them not doing it when camping?
