Just wondering if any members have been to
Maralinga in recent times. The access issue appears a little confusing with my current understanding being that access to
Maralinga itself currently does not require a permit but travel further north to Emu on the Anne Beadell does.
Has anybody travelled the
Emu Road recently or can provide feedback on the permits required from
Maralinga Tjarutja Land Council.
Lastly, the
Lake Everard Station Track allowing access from the east to Lois Rocks, and Googs Lake. Has anyone travelled this with permission from the station? What conditions were imposed and what state was the track in?
No info less than 2-3 years old on the
forum.
Thanks. Mick

We were in
maralinga in July and went out the north
gate to Emu.
We went in from
Yalata, Oldea, and then to Maraliga on the angle road. As I believe you do not need a permit from
Yalata to Oldea. 200 metres from Oldea to the Maraliga area you need a permit for the
Maralinga Tjarutja Lands. (I am not sure of the south side of
maralinga, but we could not get a permit for the north side to go to Emu without first producing a permit to enter
maralinga) It clearly states on the application form that access is not permitted from Emu to
Maralinga. We obtained a
maralinga permit by personal invitation and had a tour of the area. The
maralinga tjarutja council were surprised that we had access and as such we were able to go to emu. There is a lot changing there as the council wish to take over the test area and the town site, however there are many issues to be resolved. The current contract for the management of the site was supposed to finish some time ago but I believe there is still a long way to go with many issues associated with contamination.
There is a good book called the "Maralinga" written by a bloke called
Alan Parkinson, which details a lot of problems. Prepared to fill you in over the phone if you wish.

Hi Mick
Not quite clear on the
Maralinga Issue, but the
Maralinga Council are easy to deal with. A couple of years back, we had to obtain permission to travel through the
Yalata lands. Permission was granted and very slow, but took nearly two months to get the OK.
As for
Lake Everard, you do not have to go through there to get to
Lois Rock if you are doing the
Googs track road. I personally know the owner of
Lake Everard very
well, he lives here in
Clare.
Like "all four wheel driver want to be's " he has had lots of trouble with people passing through his property, leaving gates open, travelling when it is wet and cutting up their internal tracks, leaving rubbish and in general giving responsible four wheel drivers very bad name. The worst problem is that the
gate through his property and the National
Park is a
dingo fence. Leaving this open has happened in the past.
He was telling me that one day, a group of over 20 vehicles in one group went through when it was wet, no permission asked for and did lots of damage. Alistair now has a
NO ACCESS approach. Get in contact with me and I will give you his contact details. If you mention my name it may help, but can not guarantee anything.
If you are over that way, check out the Buckleboo Stock Route 4X4 track. Very short, but some great country.
Cheers
