The use of technology to spare some trees and my subscription funds.

Hi All
Been offline for a while but was prompted recently to dust off the keyboard about an issue that seems to becoming more prevalent again. I recently received a note from VKS737 regarding the allocation of two new frequencies for members use. This got me thinking...........

There are thousands of subscribers to this network, each receiving a posted copy of this info. Do the maths, include the postage, envelope, printing costs (in colour I might add) of the flyer and the labour to load the flyer into the envelope and so on....

Now, I like many other members of the travelling/touring community have an e-mail address. Far more convenient to access than the snail mail and at a much lower cost to both send and to receive mail into.
Keeping in mind that all clubs should be striving to keep costs down and direct as much subs income into club core activities, I cannot understand why many 4wd clubs and others still insist on sending out a mailed copy of the club newsletter every month.

I receive my power, rates, telstra and bank statements via e-mail and pay them via net banking..a completley paperless transaction. I understand that there are those members of clubs who are not online or who prefer to receive info in hard copy but surely these days they are the minority?

I am not having a shot at the VKS people here.......they are wonderful dedicated people who are extremley good at what they do. I think that the onus is upon everyone who belongs to a club or who regularly gets bills, newsletters etc. in the mail to put the pressure on the organisation to start saving some money and use technology to its best intent.

Recently, I recieved a full colour glossy A4 booklet from a very well known charitible institution begging for money. I wonder how many orphans or starving kiddies that brochure would have fed? My ex super fund insisted on mailing me full colour glossy books explaining how badly they were doing in these times of economic downturn and my super was now worth less than a can of baked beans.............notice I said ex super fund?

Sorry for the slightly OT rant here, but I aint gettin' a bigger mailbox AND a bigger hard drive at the same time!

Craig. Yes I have found the same. With work I use more paper than before with this electronic age. Most people print out the email so they can read it and put it on file - silly isnt it? At least ExplorOz email the newsletter. Cheers Tony
