I have a GARMIN GPS 16x-HVS Engine with a serial data connection (RJ45?) to my new codan NGT. If I want to split the data to also connect to my laptop which will have the GPS software on it is it as simple as getting some sort of double adaptor? The only adaptors I can find are ones that turn a serial port into 2 ports rather than sending data to two different things. I would appreciate any ideas people have. Thanks!

. . or would it be cheaper to buy a second one and avoid any complications.
I have a brand-new one I won't be needing for $50.

Hi Sam
I thinks it possible using the following product
http://www.serialportsplitter.com/splitter.html
however it would be a cheaper and simpler option to buy a usb GPS mouse to use with the laptop. THis type of GPS has no display and is designed purely for use with computers. THey are about the size of box of matches and are usually magentic and stick to the roof of your car.
They cost about $75 and are powered from the usb port.
Mine lives on the roof of my car permanently and because its outside gets a lock really quick, even in my garage.
Cheers
Stephen

I've just realised that the ASUS 900 I have doesn't have a serial port - so as much as I would like to buy a second GPS engine I would need a USB one not a serial port one.
Also - I have a separate touchscreen lcd that I will attach to the asus so don't need a second mouse.
Oh dear - back to google and more searching!
Thanks both for your responses.

Hi Same
When I used the term GPS mouse above, it is just a GPS not actually a mouse as
well. And it sounds ideal for your setup.
The term gps mouse is being used to describe them by some because they look a bit like a mouse but really its a silly term that just confuses some.

Sam
Port the GPS to the ASUS with a serial to usb connector (Google Prolific), use software like Franson
Gate to split the signal
Link to your mapping software and then to your Codan via usb to serial (or whatever connector the NGT has)

Slightly different setup, but I have a Garmin GPS with power/interface lead to attach a HP iPaq 2210. I actually split open the little 'box' which houses the electronics of the power supply and found the 2 wires that run data from the GPS to the iPaq and piggy-backed a female stereo plug on the outside. The Codan GPS input is 3.5mm stereo plug, so all I needed is a lead with 3.5mm male stereo plug at each end.....readily available at most electronic shops such as Jaycar or DSE/Tandy. I can either choose to use it or not.
Cheers,
Mark
