Ok, who has seen it and what did you think??
We loved it, some parts of the scenery seemed a bit yankieised(droving part at the cliff). We could reconise alot of the scenery around Kununurra, has made wanting to go back alot easier.Overall, we thought it was great and hope it does wonders for our great country.

Hi. Have just returned from the theatre to see the movie. Had read that it was an hour too long, middle part was boring and too many "crikeys".(I heard one, wife five) Can't believe how hard people (critics) are to please. We found it excellent all round entertainment. Gave it 4/5. Very enjoyable.

Nick, I think all of us are expecting this to be just the "Ducks Gutz" from what we have been led to believe.
I was disturbed by the American critics reviews in the Sat. paper, but will wait till I see it to make my decision. It had so much potential to expose this great land of ours, and I will be most disapointed if it fails deliver.
Most of us will no doubt relate to the scenery, and story lines from the distant past.

I saw it on Friday, and I am ambivalent.
I thought the beginning was almost "cartoonish" with insulting caricatures of Brits and Australians and inane script.
My SWMBO said thought of any intelligent woman going up to a small child and "offering condolences" is laughable.
As a critic pointed out in this morning's paper, they didn't know that Aboriginals added "um" to words like American indians eg she go-um there. And whether drovers and cattlemen actually went around with six-guns. at least there were no shoot outs.

SWMBO also wondered who laundered and crisply ironed Kidman's outfits while she was camping with the drovers
The jokey tone of the start then gave way to a melodramatic middle with the cattle drive and then to a waaaaay too long finish with seemingly a number of climaxes.
I am sure some of the shots of the Darwin bombing were from the movie "Pearl Harbour" but that doesn't worry me too much.
However SWMBO was very impressed with the Jackman shower scene.
I was a little annoyed by the strong pushing of the "stolen generation" theme in the movie.

What do you mean, annoyed by the strong pushing of the ''Stolen Generation'' theme? Does it play a large part, i didnt know it had anything to do with the film.

There was a dedication at the start and AFAIR the finish.

A large ( the major?)part of the plot concerns the "half caste" boy avoiding being taken by the authorities, again IMHO way over the top cartoonish stereotypes of priests and heartless cops.
The boy was really the star of the show whether by design or accident.
One good part was acknowledgement of the Aboriginal women who were drovers .
Now I am on dangerous ground here as I only have knowledge from what I have read, but AFAIK half caste children were usually taken from tribal environments as often they were mistreated/killed as they had no "skin". I would wonder how many were taken from a stable environment of living in a white owned station with their mother, particularly where the station owner would guarantee their education etc.
To that extent it was IMHO propaganda.
A couple of the older members of the group I went with said that he almost walked out at the beginning.
Regards Philip A

I've been told that it's Ok if you just consider it a wild west movie made in Oz instead of Hollywood.

I'm yet to see it. I think things like this get such a build by the media that we expect far too much when we actually get our bums on seats. I'm fairly easily entertained, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it. Having seen a bit of the country ,I'll be looking for familiar scenery, and won't be too critical. I actually worked with a bloke once who went to the movies solely to look for errors etc. All he'd talk about, was all the mistakes he'd found. Looking forward to it. Cheers.

Have only seen the shorts for the film , along with a little extra other footage, but honestly cant wait to see what its like. As a heap of it was shot very close to my real home, Wyndham WA. A mate has already told me he is home sick after seeing the film, after seeing the Cockburn Ranges and surrounds. Alot of the film was shot around Diggers Rest station. Cant wait, know the owners very well out Diggers, and have heard many a good yarn about the experience and being involved with the Hollywood wackos.

Saw it on Thursday. Good movie.

I was never bored throughout the 3 hour movie.

It's not the "Gone with the Wind" epic film that it could have been but it was good to see a film with an Australian theme.

Historically and geographically I picked it to pieces, but that aside I still enjoyed what was ultimately a romance.

I give this film 3.5 to 4 stars.

Probably, but then "Gone with the Wind" was a romance too.

It had other threads as well, ie Stolen Generation and Darwin Bombing.

LOL difficult to find a movie without some sort of romantic theme probably why I've never bothered to see "Gone with the Wind" either.

Don't bother Al,

When we got our first VCR back in 1984 (and paid about 2 weeks wages for it) the first thing I hired was GWTW.

What a boring waste of three hours. It must have been the inspiration for the writers of Days Of Our Lives. A dull, drawn out melodrama. About as interesting as "Titanic".

Funnily enough, at the time some brilliant movies were made, if you haven't seen them get "How Green Was my Valley" and "Witness For The Prosecution".

Cheers,

Jim.

equinox posted : geographically I picked it to pieces, you mean you noticed that it was Bowen 2007/8 not Darwin 1942. ROTFL

I'm not on for the cinema, but we have the big screen at home so we will probably wait for the DVD, besides the closest cinema is 270 km away.

Cheers Steve.

I would prefer to watch 3 episodes of Landline, that’s only my opinion, but have no objection to someone that gives a rating of 10 out of 10.
This is off topic on this forum; I do not wish to start a debate here about a Movie, besides, no remuneration for me.
If you wish, we can negotiate on remuneration, and a venue, and we go on from there!! LOL

Cheers

Hiya Guys

I wouldnt let anyones opinion about a movie stop you from seeing it..I used to read the Leigh Patsch reviews in the Herald Sun and boy when after watching the movies when they come out on DVD i just realised what a twat this guys actually was...I was so mad initially to miss many good movies based on his pathetic bad reviews...

Now i just take my chances like i will with this one..

Cheers

Went last night.

My two bobs?

A bit too long - has two main endings which made it more suitable as a mini series than a movie.
Also some stereotypical caricatures of aussies & poms.

I liked the cinematography and the dreamy or 1940's stying. Made it look different.

The Aussie outback scenery looked sensational once you saw past the digital stuff.

Made me wanna get back out there too.

Worth seeing but only once. IMHO.

Worst movie ever. At best a chick flick with a few good scenic shots. Why call it Australia?? It's going to make a lot of people think bad things about us.

Stu,

As I know, you are a dead set bloke. Your call is good enough for me.

Maybe I'll get a $1.50 DVD of it next time I go to Bali, and have a look then. Maybe not LOL.

Sounds like that other waste of time "Titanic".

I thought I was going to see a movie about a shipping disiaster, it was nothing more than a soppy love story, could have been set anywhere. I could adapt the story and call it MCG.

Jim.
