Hi. I am choosing between 2 GQ RX 2.8TD as my first 4x4 for a trip to the Top End. One has aircon and the other doesn't. This could be a decider in which one I buy.

Do you know if after market aircon can be fitted in a 1995 RX and what sort of money I would be looking at?

Thanks for your help.

I have a RX 4.2 with factory air.

I would not even consider buying a vehicle with no airconditioner installed as it would be a nightmare to fit, I would think. You would probably be looking at $2000/$3000 to spend on a wagon that is only worth about $7000.

Cheers

An after market aircon can be fitted to that model but as William stated it would cost you. Also be aware that the 2.8 TD has a very poor low torque range that can be a real problem in sand and if towing anything heavy. I owned a GQ of that exact year and model for four years so I have first hand Knowledge,,Regards Foxhound(WA).

Foxhound-if I'm not planning on towing or doing too much driving in sand, so from your knowledge as a former owner of the 2.8, would you have any concerns about using one mainly on corrugated raods (Tanami track for example)? Won't be overladen-roof top tent is the main weight other than spare tyre, jack and a couple of jerry cans. Thanks again for your help.

Thanks Willem and Foxhound. That makes the decision a bit easier!

Not planning on towing but Foxhound's comments about sand is tempting me to look at the 4.2 in either Patrol or LC instead so more decisions to make! Unfortunately I'm a complete novice and wish my budget was more elastic!

No problems with what you want to use it for then. I actually have owned two 2.8 TD, the GQ and GU Patrol from new four years each. Both these vehicles were good except for the low torque problem and I had to upgrade the rear coil springs in both as they failed under a heavy load. The coil springs are around $350 fitted for the Lovell heavy duty and no more problems after that. IMO the Nissan is a good all round 4x4 the GQ being a particularly good model. I spent about 20 years as a mechanic on mostly Nissan and LandCruiser and both brands have had their problems over the years. The LandCruiser main weak point up until recent years was the gearbox and a very costly repair at that. I changed from LandCruiser to Nissan in 95 for that particular reason. I have only just gone back to LandCruiser this year for the reason Nissan only have a 4 Cyl diesel at this stage. If you look at other diesels a turbo is your best option if possible and in your budget. The only other advice I would give is to have the vehicle checked out by a competent 4x4 mechanic before you buy, as repairs on these vehicles can be very expensive indeed. Make sure you know what you are buying and if at all possible go that little bit later model and better condition, it may save you big dollars down the track. Regards Foxhound(WA).

Curtley,

I'm confused. The RX model was a 'special' edition in it's day which came with a few extras (bit of a selling pitch I guess). One of the standards was air-cond I'm fairly sure. Carperts, cloth seats and electric mirrors were thrown in there.

Anyway, I have a RX 2.8td and you will be more then happy with it. We have done an enourmous amounts of trips including 3 crossings of the Simpson carrying a huge load (we were a support vehicle for 3 bike riders so carried their food, water, fuel and camping gear also). Never got bogged once.
One of the trips was a mercy dash into Birdsville due to a broken collar bone. Half way across the Simpson to the hospital (13hrs non stop and yes that first beer at the pub tasted good) and back the next day to meet up with the group again. The vehicle has never failed me.
Googs, Flinders (heaps!), Simpson, Robe, Coorong and hopefully Canning next year.

Kw is about the same because of the turbo between the 2.8td and the 4.2 (mid 80's from memory). Not sure about the torque but I would suspect the 4.2 to be higher!
Anyway what I am trying to say is that bigger isn't always better. You will get great economy out of this engine yet still have a very bush worthy vehicle.

Agree, if carrying a camper trailer etc it will still do it fine but you would struggle more so than if you had the 4.2 (maybe ride the clutch a bit etc?). If not then the 2.8td is the way to go.

Gossy,,,Aircon was not standard in the 2.8TD RX as I had to have it fitted as an extra. The first vehicles off the line did not have central locking, electric mirrors either. From memory the RX was the step down from the ST that had the alloy wheels and extra bits. Regards Foxhound(WA).

I have a RX 2.8td and i go away with a few Gu owners and it has gotten me everywhere the Gu,s have gotten.
I tow a 380 off roader and whilst it is sluggish off the line once its moving its fine.
I have just had a 3 inch mandrel bent Semi stainless from the turbo back and it has fixed any sluggishness she once had. Has plenty of down low grunt now and extra top end as well
I think for a 6 to 10K 4x4 they are the beez knees

Yes good point. I have also done the exhaust upgrade and it did make a big difference in driveability and power.

Thanks for all the advice.

Have seen a tidy 2.8TD and looking at a 4.2 tonight. Similar age and km and similar price (2.8 from a garage, 4.2 private sale, so think that explains why they are similar price!). Sounds like either would be perfect for what I am after though maybe the 4.2 would be a better long term prospect if condition is right.

Either way will be getting them checked by a mechanic before I part with the cash.
