Time of charging question

G,Day all,

I have a charging question?

If I am discharging a 100ah battery by approx 25ah on a small fan overnight,(5hrs running on a timer) what would best recharge method be to do so in a few hours?

I can go ctek xs7000, which is 7amps,

or should I go for a 10amp charger?

Ideally I would like to replace this amount whilst running genny for about 2-3 hrs during following day, ready to go again?

Any advice appreciated,

Ron

Hi Ron

You can definately go a bigger charger - 15 amps would be good.

To give you best answer one needs to know the battery as they have different charging rates depending on construction.

Can you get manufacturers data ?

The second issue is wether you like to play with stuff and do it yourself ?

For instance I replace the charge my fridge uses overnight in under 1/2 hour because I have an Orbital 50AH battery which can be charged at 40-50amps for a short time if you keep an eye on the heat and voltage.
To do this I use a low cost 45amp charger with variable volts control.
(Mostly though - I'm in the bush and just run the car and this is sort of what the alternator does)

I wouldn't reccomend the manual fast charge method to anyone who doesn't like playing with this stuff because you can stuff the battery without to much trouble.

A safe straight answer to your question would be to use a controlled charger like the C-Tek 15amp unit or equivalent.

Hi Robin,

its a century 100ah deep cycle. I would like to replace the charge in a few hrs genny useage during day.

Would you say the ctek 7000 take too long?

To long for me Ron - remember the rough rule of thumb is that you can charge at C5 or 1/5th of the amp hour rating , so cost is the only real reason for not charging faster.

yeah gotta agree, the $$ saved versus the waiting and waiting and waiting on it charging.

Will def go the xs15000, can look at the xs25000, but think that is starting to get a bit too much.

Ron,

Buy a Ctek 25 amp charger, and keep your genny running times to a minimum.

Realise they are >$500, but the extra fuel is going to cost in long term too. I've got the 7amp Ctek, and its like watching paint dry, when charging a 100ah battery.

Hooroo,
Bob.

The c-tek xs25000 (max 25a @ 14.4v, 85% efficiency) would only use around 400w maximum! More than adequate for your gennie . :-)

A CTek 7 amp charger won't charge any faster than a 7 amp charger that costs 1/4 the price.

The extra "modes" in a CTek provide protection for exceptional situations - overdischarge etc.

Hi Mike,

appreciate that fact, thats why went for the 25amp.

the ctek is supposed to be good on desulphation, which I figured is good, as its a pretty top charger all round.

They are pricey, but the deals on ebay are great, and really take sting out of it.

I just need to be able to replace what my overnight fan takes out, whilst my gen is on running air for later part of arvo, so wanted it to charge fairly quickly, which it should do fine.

Was gonna go the 15amp, but the 25 was so cheap, in fact cheaper than the 15 locally.

Oh well another expensive camping accessory..............lol

Hi

I notice in the warranty information on the Ebay site that the warranty does not cover the charger if powered by a geni.

Having a Ctek myself and the Honda 20EU20i I would welcome any comments.

Is the seller just covering is backside?

They are certainly a good price.

Hi Rowdy,
The first bloke mentions warranty in relation to generators but the second bloke doesn't and the second one is the cheapest!

I'd say the first bloke has had problems with the voltage and/or frequency control afforded by some of the very cheap generators.

I don't have trouble running any form of battery charger off my EU10i. In fact I have a Ctek 6volt 800mA charger I use off one of these, Sterling Inverter to recharge some torches.

It doesn't give me any bother either.

Rowdy,

I'd have to agree with Geoff, being a piece of fiarly high tech electronic equipment the concern (from the seller No1) is prob running from inferior quality gens which are producing far from clean power.

Its pretty much generally accepted that the Honda produces as good if not better than commercial power.

In any case tho.... be hard to prove the supply source.

Even if you admitted it, I doubt anyone would cite a honda generator as a cause for warranty failure.

Personally I would run ANYTHING I own off my Honda, but I am selective when it comes to running off my dc inverter.

Inverter generators should be safe for chargers and also standard generators with AVR (Auto Voltage regulation)

All modern chargers with switchmode technology have the potential to desulphate.
