As I only have 88 days of paid work left, I am looking at which way to go when it comes to my ongoing communications needs.
Never had to worry before as worked supplied mobile & internet connections.
I have started looking at what is available and it is a greater task than working out what fridge / tyres / fwd is best.

I am going to need mobile, home phone ( or do I) home internet and mobile internet for the trips I am planning for next year.

What way to go ??

Any suggestions
Vince

G'day Vince

Keep it simple.

Get a mobile phone and one of those Bluetooth thingies you plug into the computer(laptop) for internet access. Base costs are around $40 per month unless ofcourse you want mega downloads.

I should go that way as we have a landline, 2x mobiles and a satphone....lol The whole shebang including average calls costs about $150per month

Cheers

Depends on a lot of things, such as your wants and needs, how long you will be away vs home etc.
A Bigpond Home Network Gateway on the nextG network, with VOIP such as MyNetfone would cover the internet and phone. A prepaid mobile for backup. This could be used at home as well. Again it all depends on how much you use internet and what you are willing to pay. Prepaid mobile with prepaid data pack is another option. There are many options as evidenced on a number of forums.

Vince

We have started to move around the country a bit.

We are only home for a week or two at a time, sometimes only a couple of days, and have a $29 Telstra plan for home and a prepaid samsung A411 for travel.

We also have a wireless net work for the laptop.

Lately we have considered whether the home phone is really needed.

After three or four weeks away the only messages are from people trying to flog us something.

In a nutshell mobile pre paid and laptop or something similar will do the job.

You may want to consider a nodephone (phone uses broadband) instead of fixed line, because there is no line rental and interstate calls are untimed and same cost as local.Internode link.

you still pay a fee somewhere though because the broadband / internet needs a phone line. Ours is through the voip company while many others you still have to pay telstra the $20 or $30 to keep the line open. we pay $20 a month....and its not to telstra!!yayayay!!

Have just moved the internet and home phone over to iinet...12gb download @ 1500 speed, landline and voip for $90 a month, no extra. so no more telstra (our bill for bigpond by itself is $70 a month + $30 landline fee + what ever phone usage - with mobile we usually average $220 a month).....except for the mobile.....that has to stay for a tad longer.

My brother has his mobile with someone (forget who) and pays $70 a month I think it is and gets a huge amount of phone and msg's...I think he gets about $300 worth.....they have only just put hte home phone on cos they have gone from a wireless internet to the normal thing......

they are just some options.....havent read the other responses yet....just getting in quick while kids are packing up!!

Depends where u live. go to iinet.net.au and to Naked DSL and see if where u live gets that. It is internet on iinet's own DSLAMS ( for those who dont know a DSLAM is the module in an exchange that connects you to the internet) Sort of
If iinet has one in your exchange you can get reeeeeally fast net speeds like 24000k That is d/load a movie in 10 mins.
Also you dont have a home phone but they give you a phone and number so you do but you dont if you know what I mean.
All for about $70 a month for about 15 gig a month

i was on iinet at home and got 20gig a month plus a voip connection for $59 a month plus $30 for home phone which we only used for inward and used the voip phone for outward calls.

I also have a $10 a month plan with Mynetfone and get 100 untimed calls anywhere in Aussie for that.
Have just paid them $99 for a year and get 1200 untimed calls for that.
Now that I am living in the van I bought a TELSTRA USB turbo card and a $59 a month 1 gig casual plan. This can be altered up or down without charge if u dont want to use it to $5 a month or up higher if u want to use it a lot.

I considered Optus but no coverage outside of towns when travelling as per thread on here.

Using cell fone for data is horribly expensive I thought so have done the above
Cheers
