We plan to buy a Troopy and have found one that interests us: a ’95, 4.2D, 195,000km, high roof (previously Brits camper), dual batteries, dual tank, Cofap 4WD shocks, Kelly Safari tyres (30,000km), stereo….but we do have some concerns:
- is 22K a reasonable price?
- we are used to having BFG MT’s and wonder if we should replace these Safari’s?
- does anyone know if these Cofap shocks have a good reputation?
- though it is a camper, it doesn’t have an underbody watertank, which is very expensive…
Is there any advise out there ;-)?

The price may be a bit high since it doesnt have much equipment (that youve mentioned). I would also be a little wary of the ex-rental - youll see what I mean once you see how they are treated by the travellers. Not just that, word is that the hire companies do not conduct any servicing, rather they run them up to 50,000kms then sell them. The maintenance manual outlines some pretty serious service checks for the first 100,000km and as any keen 4WDriver will tell you, it is wise to service your diesel vehicle every 5,000km, at minimum 10,000km. As for tyres, youre likely to go through a few sets so dont change them until you need to. Then buy a whole new set. Keep pricing underbody tanks. We got ours for about $300 (stainless) in Sydney which is worth it I think.
