..may be relevant?

I was driving past an army base about a week ago, and they had a line up of what looked like brand new 80 series Toyotas.

What caught my eye was they all had, at the end of what appeared standard snorkel tube, large black ball like inlets. Ball size was larger than a human head and shaped more like a pumkin.

I'm no expert, but brand new to me.

They use the Factory Snorkel as they are not supposed to modify what is termed White Fleet vehicles and I would guess that they were 70 Series vehicles. The Factory Snorkel is standard on these now.

The snorkels you saw are a standard Tojo unit, they are more of a precleaner/rain stopper head and not the standard ram unit.

I have just fitted a safari to my 80.
I went safari mainly due to the build quality and the shape, they are also supposed to flow more air than the others.
The intake noise is now more prominent and i have slightly better pickup through the gears, the 1 HZ needs all the help it can get.
Anyway Im happy.

I fitted a Safari snorkel to my 80 as well as Pacemaker extractors in Alice before I left, I'd already fitted a K&N filter.

The net effect is that the 1HZ is now much more responsive & I am now able to match the highway speeds of other vehicles more easily.

The reason that I fitted the Safari unit was firstly that it looks much better than others that I've seen, also I got it at a good price & fitted it myself.

I have had Safari's on both my HJ60 & now on my Diesel Prado. The main reason is that you can easily pull off the ram head & fit a pre-cleaner if required as if you do any sort of convoy work, the dust can accumulate quite quickly over a few days drive.

Cheers
