I wish to record and save the details of a 4x4 trip onto a Laptop. I welcome any ideas from people who have used a GPS receiver to a laptop, for personnel use only - thank you

Hi Tony,

How long is this trip? This may make a difference to some recommendations. Does the tracklog need to be high resolution (eg 1 point every 10m) or is a general feel of the track necessary?

Tony,

are you running a moving map program like Oziexplorer or Trackranger? I have both although I'm currently only proficient with Trackranger. It gives the ability to "trace" a track of your entire trip. This means you can gain both an in depth analysis of the trip with GPS points, altitude, speed etc etc but also gives a pictorial representation of any or all legs of your trip. The track trace can be saved and then loaded onto any other computer with the Trackranger program. I use a Mouse GPS unit on the dash of my vehicle connected directly to the computer.

Cheers

Mick.

Hi Tony

Pretty standard thing to do , we save every trip always.
In fact I always have the GPS on and recording - who knows it might help me aviod a speeding ticket one day.

I use a Garmin 276c GPS and it can save enormous amounts of data to multiple tracks internally.

While I do it ocasionallly, its usually a bother to download while camping and so I leave it till we get home. There are several programs that allow this like ozi , but I mostly use the software that came with this GPS (Mapsource).

I bought a data logger for track recording, because when my laptop crashes I lose any unsaved data.
The logger just keeps on keeping on, and I can download it after a few days.
cheers

Me too

I have one of these units and I can have it 'in-line' so it gets the GPS signal on the way to my computer so I can run both at same time or seperately

Hi, Not sure what unit you have but mate has a Garmin Street Pilot 2610 and Mapsource on our PC's , he sets it to Breadcrumbs and it records all his travel , stops , speed etc , and he transfers it to his laptop and when on a outback QLD trip last August he was Emailing each days log to me and I could bring it up on Mapsource and then in Google Earth and I could even see what tree he had parked under,
It also gives you graph of the speed you travel and altitudes as well.
I think the upper models of most brands have this feature.
very handy also keeps your complete trip log as well.

Cheers Des.

Hello Des, Thank you for your reply regarding my GPS Receiver question.
What my wish list is, to record a 4x4 trip and to be able to replay it through navigator software either on a laptop and or a Hema Navigator for example.
I have not purchased any equipment yet or software,
Looking at Oziexplorer software, but still looking for a good GPS unit that I can use to record and then replay as a moving map on a laptop

Tony, Oziexplorer will do that for you. I have recently finished a 6 week trip from Adelaide to Halls Creek, down the CSR, along the Gunbarrel to Ayers Rock, then back to Adelaide. Recorded the whole trip in one (large) file. Using Ozi, you can play back at any set speed and watch as the map moves along accordingly. I actually use the created track file along with Oziphototool to automatically create waypoints which are linked to all of the digital photos I take along the way.
Cheers

I have two GPS units that do this Garmin Nuvi 760 with Topo V2.1 and a pretty old Magellan Meridian Gold with DiscoverAus v.1.00. I must admit I have not used the tracking facilities to much on the Nuvi, but I love the old Magellan, when I hook it up to the computer and down load tracks it come up with a great deal of info like Pos Alt Date and Time. Not bad for an old unit, you might be able to find something like this around pretty cheap.
