Hi there.

I am in the process of buying a Patrol GQ 2.8TD (1997 model) and have had a vehicle inspected by the RACV. They have advised that there is "transmission rollover noise" in neutral and "differential whine" at speeds over 50kph. Nissan's mechanics at the dealership I may buy it from have looked at the vehicle and can find nothing wrong and say that this is typical of this model, age and mileage vehicle (has about 227k km on the clock), and that these problems are inherent in the Y60 and were bred out to a degree in the Y61 Patrol.

I wondered if anyone has any experience of this or knows if this explanation is correct? Keen on the vehicle but don't want to be picking the transmission and diff off the Tanami track in two months time!

Thanks for your help.

G'day, having owned one and with that sort of mileage, I would steer clear of it, you are buying trouble, spend a bit more and get a 4.2, petrol or diesel. Just my two cents worth.

Curtley

If at 227,000km it has gearbox and diff noises then I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole. Keep on looking and preferably for a 4.2 if you are still keen on a GQ.

Cheers

Curtley ..

I agree with previous posts. I have had a 1995 4.2 EFI since 50,000k , now 216,000, most of those Ks pulling a 2.6ton van on bitumen ... NO off road. They are excellent well built workhorses.

I have absolutely no transmission noises & it still looks pretty!

I value it at say $5-10K max. There's got to be lots of them about these days for around that price.

I'd be patient & look about for the right one. Costs a lot to replace major transmission bits .. unless you are well equipped to do it yourself.

cheers .. G

From my experience with RACV inspections ,I wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing wrong with the vehicle.I once sold a virtually new vehicle to a family friend who wanted a RACV inspection done. They said the engine had an oil leak, the car was run on hoist for 4 hours at the local mechanics and didn't leak a drop.I think they feel obliged to find something wrong with every vehicle they look at.-SteveL

Thanks for all the help. It may be that it won't turn out to be a problem but seems it would be better to spend a bit more now on the 4.2 (Patrol or LC) than take the risk.

I hired one many years ago & with a trailer & a good load it was the biggest slug I'd ever driven..go for the 4.2. You wont find
it very comfortable on the Tanami in 2 months time, so dont go in
something that may fail........oldbaz.

I have heard a heap of GQ patrols with a gearbox noise which is most noticeable in the lower gears.... I think it is a Nissan thing but the cars keep on keeping on...

If you are unsure bring it to a diff and gearbox specialist for a bit of a listen.

I have known 2 people with the 2.8 motor.. both in the GU shape Nissan and while the motors keep going they are a bit slow and tend to use more fuel than the 4.2 as they are always pushing a bit harder.

One of the guys with the 2.8 loved his but the other wasn't all that fussed and eventually sold the car.
