There has been quite a lot about the eeePC 900 on here of late, but while I was in Dickies the other day I see they have two 8.9 inch computers for sale an Acer and a Toshiba, I am more interested in the Toshiba so I will give its details....Toshiba NB100/CO2 8.9" Netbook....1.6GHz Processor..1GB Ram..120GB HDD..
I know the eeePC 900 has a Solid State Drive but does this make up for all the other stuff the Toshiba has?
The Toshiba is $599 after cash back the eeePC 900 I can get for $450 plus freight. All thoughts always appreciated.

Cheers Bruce

Isuzumu,

I have the Acer. It's very good. It comes with XP (not sure what the Toshiba has but I prefer XP to Vista).

I noticed the other day in a Retravision catalogue, they had the Acer at a very good price, better than Dickies after cash back. It might be worth checking to see if it's still current.

Unfoirtunately I can't recall the exact dollars.

Although the freebie hard case Dickies are offering would be really handy. I had to wrap mine in the middle of my suitcase during our recent trip to China to protect it.

cheers

Hi Bushy, the Acer was $577 and the same amount Pro/Ram/HDD, but the Toshiba just looks better. Have you used yours for navigating? We have XP Pro on disc so thats not a problem.

Hullo Bruce,

I haven't got around to putting OziExplorer on it yet but I'm sure it would do the job very well with one of those USB GPS antenna thingies.

I'm also sure the Toshiba would be just as good. Still worth a call to Retravision tomorrow to check their price. It was very good.

cheers

Just another thought Bruce,

These days the whole fiscal philosophy is to keep as much of your money in YOUR pocket as possible.

Both brands are almost identical specs. I would bargain for the best deal (remembering that retailers are going to be doing it tough this Xmas) working on lowest price and value of freebies.

happy hunting.

(Having just waxed lyrical about keeping your money in your pocket I'm giving strong consideration to putting a VMS Nav System in my Cruiser:)

Bruce, I have the EEEPC 900 and its been on every 4wd trip I have been on, its never given me any trouble. I have it conneted to a gps mouse and run Ozi explorer. I power it in the car with a charger/power supply from ebay. I have it mounted on the dash of my Patrol and bumps, rough roads atc have not so far upset it, you could do worse

cheers

Rabs
Do you have any pictures of your mounting arrangement. I am in the middle of adding a touch screen, inbuilt GPS and 250G external hard drive to my Eee 900.

Hi Bruce

The FIRST thing I would be looking at is what you going to be using for computer for? GPS; email; internet; WP; etc

As stated the EeePC 900 has a solid state drive. The Toshiba has a 120GB HDD. The latter doesn't take too kindly to being bashed around the bush. (not that I have tested either in that respect).

The EeePC uses a 12V power supply. Don't think you can just plug that into your cigarette lighter - it's NOT 12V - and the cranking amps can also affect supply. I'm currently investigating a "pure 12V" supply for computers to take into consideration these factors. Still in infancy stage.

If you don't know much about computers I would recommend you get XP as your OS. At least you will find somebody around to help you get out of trouble when necessary. Linux (Ubuntu, Red Hat, etc) IMHO is for the geeks and Vista is a real screwup. Even a lot of the pros are avoiding it.

As for software, don't get suckered into having to buy Microsoft Office etc. There are far cheaper options (and just as good) available for download e.g. www.OpenOffice.org has a full office suite for FREE.

PM me if you want to.

HTH

My 1000HD eeePC uses one of these for the troopy.

Brando charger

Went for the bigger screen/kb over those mentioned above. Added more ram and 250gb HDD.
Pairs with a BT GPS (gTouch) & run mobile garmin and oziexplorer.

Very happy ;}

Dont worry about the hard drives in the laptops. They are close to bullet proof.
The Toshiba is a good unit as we have a couple of the small ones at work. The Aldi 10" unit $600 WinXP is a great unit. I managed to get another Aldi unit last week as some stores still have them. If the Aldi 10" had not been available would have bought more Toshiba.

I for one will never ever again use a standard laptop with a hard drive when going bush. Though I should note that I have only tried my old Sony Vaio 12" laptop in doing so, but it constantly crashed and system had to be rebooted, navigation system restarted etc. etc. So I would not recommend it, and with the price of SSD based systems these days, it is by far a much better option if you are serious about going bush.

I am for one going to get a SSD state one, or a user Toughbook (but expect it to be too dear!).... as I grew tired of all the problems with coorugations etc. Trackranger itself was bullet proof, but the laptop... hmmm... cause of frustrations for sure!

Just my $0.02 cents worth.

Just a quick question, why did the corrigations effect the laptop. We have done GRR, Anne Beadell etc with no problems other than a power plug vibrating out once until we used bluetack to hold it in. Only problem I have ever found is using a laptop on 12 volt cig plug and starting vehicle and system doing restart, easily solved by either using second battery or an inverter, IMHO.

Blaze

Hard Disk Drives (HDD) have extremely fine tolerances. The distance between the head and the disk platter is next to nothing. When the HDD is spinning and subject to jars, bumps, knocks, (does corrugations fall into that category?), the head can actually touch the surface of the platter and damage it. With a Solid State Disk this can not happen (its just like a memory chip).

However, all is not lost taking HDD PC bush. 1. Make sure it has some form of shock protection during rough tracks; and 2. Use the Defrag utility after a rough trip. It will (try to) fix and mask out any bad sectors it finds on the platter. It will also adjust some of you files so that the computer will work faster. Common problem when user complains of sloooow computer.

In this morning's paper in Perth (Sat) Harvey Norman have the Acer advertised at $496 after $69 cashback.

That's the lowest I've seen it and about $100 less than I paid.

Just out of interest's sake, I was in Hong Kong 3 weeks ago and the same unit was AUD$800.

cheers

We have a new Harvey Norman opening in town not far from us soon so think I may wait to see what discounts they have then.
