G,day John&Val (act)
Have just read your blog about your
Kimberley trip, very enjoyable. You mention that Home Valley has been bought by
El Questo. I have just read an article in the latest issue of
Outback Mag that Home Valley ,Durack River and Karunjie stations
leases have been bought by the Indigenous Land Corporation.
Not too sure now whats what.
Regards Doug.

You are correct Doug, the Land Council have owned those properties for quite some years.
Last I heard,
El Questro was on the market.
Cheers,
Peter

Thank you for your interest and comments. Sounds as if the story we got was either wrong at the time, or things have moved on in the last 5 months. The GRR isn't what it was and sounds as if present moves won't make it any more traveller friendly. Real shame - beautiful country but where can you pull up for a day or so and soak it up without being part of a regimented paying crowd?

No question, John and Val.
Free camping on the GRR and the
Kalumburu Road is certainly getting very difficult, for those who prefer this.
And everywhere else that is becoming popular too for that matter.

Peter

Stayed at both in 2007. Home Valley etc are ILC properties. Home Valley is being used in a TAFE course for indigenous students to teach them skills for getting jobs in Hospitality industry.
ElQuestro part of Voyages chain - properties for sale due to financial woes of the parent company (MFC??) - this happened before the financial crisis, too - they overextended themselves.

Nick Bradley and his wife who manage Home Valley have spent $16M over the last 2 years to develop a range of accomodation including river side
camping and all the support facilities that that requires. Very impressive.

Peter,
agree. The riverside "bush"
camp area is great, although a bit dusty when we were there (late August). Ablutions block wonderful. The
views and sunsets have to be seen to be believed. You don't have to pay extra to view the crocs there, either! Home Valley certainly deserves patronage by GRR travellers.
That said, it is a pity that
camping at Jacks
Waterhole not longer exists. That was a great spot, too.

They are talking about re-opening Jacks
waterhole too, when Home Valley has 'settled down'.

Peter
