Hi, I am looking at winches for my Patrol, has anyone had some experience with the 12,000 lb Tigerz 11 Winch.

Also I have a factory fitted steel bull bar that came with the car. Do I need a separate mounting plate for the winch for does it come with the bull bar.

Regards,

Iceman

I think thats the brand my brother just got , came with radio control as well. His was accidentally shipped with plasma rope so he was very happy. Seems to be ok so far , pretty similar to a lot of low end winches.

I refuse to fit a bullbar to my car, and made my own seperate mounting system consisting of a flat horizontal steel plate across and on top of the two chassis rails.

Hi Robin,

Thanks for the tip on the mounting. The plasma rope from what I have read is pretty good.

Have a good day.

Iceman,

I put the Ironman winch in my Patrol 2 years ago and couldn't be happier with it. It came with the remote which I used in anger for the first time in September this year. Performed well. I went with the Ironman because it offered good value and I know their service and warranty are excellent. I am however, not a serious winch user and try to avoid getting myself into situations where I need it so it will not see a huge amount of use (hopefully).

Not familiar with the tigerz but there is an interesting article winches HERE pages 44 thru to 57. Migh be of some benefit. There was also some discussion about the Tigerz winch on the Patrol forum. Try this LINK.

Cheers

Mick

I've had his 12000 lb winch for almost 4 years now and can't fault it and it's been used quiet a bit.

Last year, after getting back from a trip on the Cape I noticed that the corrugations had loosened the set screw out that held the clutch lever and all was gone. Contacted Tigerz II to purchase a new one and received one 3 days later at NO CHARGE. Pretty darn good service in my opinion.

Now you'll get plenty of detractors for any winch that doesn't have Warn on it, but I've got no complaints.

I pulled it out before our trip this year to clean and regrease and everything looked perfect inside. (We used it 4 times on the trip)

Can't help with the Patrol mounting as ours is on a Prado with an ARB bar.

Cheers,

Geoff

Thanks Geoff, thats givem me some confidence. I looked at their web site and also on 4WD TV thay had a segment on the instalation of the winch and they looked ok.

Price wise they seem ok as well. Like you I don't anticipate using it a great deal but I believe I should have one up front.

Latest issue of 4WD Action has an excellant winch comparison.
Premier winches came out on top with the Warn 9.5 XP 2nd and the TJM/OX 3rd

You beat me to it ha ha. Surprising how they said all of them were rubbish. Or at least disappointing. At least they REALLY tested them and gave non-biased opinions and recommendations. A real eye opener.

Iceman, if your Patrol has air bags, legally you can only use the Warn 9000 (I think), it is marked on the bar, anything else will void your insurance, just something to think about............

Thanks John, that's a point that I would not have thought about at all. Why would you only be able to use a Warn why not another brand?

Interesting situation, thanks

Hi Iceman

After considering a number of cheaper options and discussing them here on the forum, we purchased a 9 tonne Warn - but got a second hand reconditioned one at a comparative price to the cheaper Chinese winches. We got an ARB bull bar to mount it on as the Patrol had a aluminium one - the ARB bar is a good solid one. We have now transferred the winch to the F250. We haven't needed to use it.

Oops Shaker - i stand corrected - it is 9,000 lb. We should get a bigger one for our rig, but took the cheaper option of staying with the one we had. Some with similar rigs fit 12,000 and 15,000 lb winches.

A snatch block makes it 18000lbs and two makes it 27000lbs, just takes a bit of thought and planning

Iceman,

Check out the latest 4wd action Magazine as they have done a very extensive write up on the top 10 winches of which is very interesting as most expensive is not always the best as many of the big brand names failed the test.
