I've always been a Diesel fan but the Gov'yt is not supporting this eco friendly fuel - so I MIGHT change. Just sold my 2005 Toyota Hilux Turbo Diesel - looking to buy a wagon for $20 000. Family wagon & will not be towing anything & it must be automatic.

Looking at the older shape Prado due to the price ? But I need to know fuel economy figures to compare the petrol & diesel ?

What figures does the 6 cyclinder 3400 run ? How many Km per tank ?

Also are there issues with the old 3L Diesel motor ie cracking heads ?

I may even if I go diesel inject it with LPG.

I will also look at 80 series cruiser Diesel also if auto.

Look forward to your replies & advice.
Cheers Beddo

Gday Beddo,
I used to travel a lot with Prado owners - the 3.4 auto was pretty economical on the open road - they'd get about 13.5-15 l/100k depending on speed etc while I'd get 12 out of a manual Prado diesel. When crawling in low range, the difference was a lot more.

They hold 159 litres of fuel, and could go from Oodnadatta to Birdsville on about 130 litres.

The diesel 1KZ-TE has been known to crack heads - not often, but it happens.

Re 80series, a 1Hz diesel auto is a real slug and uses more fuel than you'd like. A factory TD auto (1HD-T or 1HD-FT) is a much better option, and fuel consumption is about the same as a Prado diesel.

2003 Prado 3l Diesel does 9.6L/100 KM with cruise control at 2000 RPM = 89 kph indicated / 85 kph true by GPS when at medium to heavy weights. 1800 RPM is slightly better. When I need new tyres, I'll go for larger diameter which should be even better. When refueling, drive forward then reverse and you'll get rid of huge air bubbles and get another 6 to 7 litres in.

I wish there was a cheap accurate 'fuel used' counter on the market. This F to E relying on a lump of cork on a piece of wire is pretty useless.

Beddo,

Does it have to be a Tojo?

There are a lot of other vehicles offering far better value for money. Jackaroo V6 is a gem and you can still pick up a Terracan V6 with some of the 5 year warranty left for less than a much older Prado.

Cheers,

Jim.

Jim, no it does not have to be a Tojo, but not a Holden I'm a Ford fan & I couldn't do it.

Terracan maybe - do they have the centre diff lock like the Prado. Whats the reliability like ?

I use to have a 97 Surf & it was great, plenty of room & good ground clearance, I went to Cape york & the kimberley in it, but parts well were an issue ?

I will go offroad but not extreme stuff, may do Simpson in it.
Like the torque of the diesels, though maybe should have a drive of a V6 !
Cheers Beddo

PS. The old 4Runners & Surfs had the right size & ground clearance, you could sleep in the back if you wanted with the tailgate down - can't down that in anything else I've seen.

PPS. Delica (import) ? What are they like ?

Beddo,

Jack is not an Holden, it's an Isuzu, rebranded by Holden.

Terracan does not have a centre diff, but you won't need it. Reliabity is great, I owned one for nearly four years and only traded it as I needed a ute.

Terracan does need some lift, Ironman do a great kit. The diesel is a good, economical unit, but having driven them they lack the urge of the V6 and command a much higher price.

Jim.

Missed one of your points, The Simpson.

Terracan ha a piddly 75 litre tank and the V6 eats fuel in the sand. Long range tank is available, 120 L I think, but I doubt you'd get across the Simpson on that.

Diesel would probably suit you better.

Have a look at www.terracan.australia4wd.com

I set that forum up nearly four years ago and there is a heap of information. Should answer any question you may have.

BTW, my wife has a Hyundai Getz, which has just turned 4. Never had a single warranty issue it. Hyundai do make a very good, reliable vehicle.
