Hi Everyone

i'm Janelle, have just joined this wonderful forum and having fun reading and exploring. I would very much love to get right into camping, although i have only been once it just really triggered my wanting to do it.

Are there any camping clubs as such in the Brisbane area? I'm a single female who would be camping on their own which does worry me a great deal, so i'd love to meet other people who have the same interest, I don't want to let it stop me exploring this great land of ours.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks and i look forward to having a good look round the site

Take Care
Janelle

Hi Janelle. I've met many single ladies travelling and camping around Australia. Naturally there are personal security issues, but they usually boil down to common sense.
You'll find that the bush isn't half as scary as you might think. Do your homework and get out there and enjoy!

Thank you so much for the reply, oh I love the bush for sure, my dad is a beekeeper so i've spent alot of time there, but just not in awhile. Have you met all ages of women travelling? I'm 32 and think maybe i'm getting on a bit for trouping round the country side in a tent lol. Looking at buying a 4wd next year as I really want to get out there, just me my fishing rod and my camera.

I agree i think just plain common sense, if you are going to camp in the middle of the nullabor then maybe that's not such a good idea lol

Thanks again for you reply, has got me fired up now

Take care
Janelle

32 isn't too old for anything ! I've met women from around 18 (but in pairs) through to a lady who was 73, travelling in an on road van from Birdsville north.
I'm always surprised when I meet solo women in remote or semi remote spots, but I'm an old chauvenist I think. I always ask them if they are well prepared with food water spares etc (they are usually better prepared than I am !), and always enquire if anyone has seen them when I reach my destination. Perhaps it's my father instinct :)
I'm sure that you'll have a ball at your age. So many places to go, people to meet, things to see.
This forum will provide a host of resources for you to plan your trips. Good luck, and should you meet an old guy in a Landcruiser with a cap on who won't shut up, just remember he's not as scary as he looks :))

Here are a couple of young women I met in the Gibson Desert. They were travelling east to Alice Springs, as they had booked a week at a resort there. Sadly they were travelling to fast for conditions, and blew a tyre. They didn't have any communications.

When setting up your tent, make sure that your guy ropes are long enough to give you a reasonable angle. A couple of nurses in Ulura campgrounds spent an eventful night (storm) finding that out...first time campers are such fun :))

Mark, I even emailed them after the trip and asked if they had made it ok....no reply so I guess maybe I am as scary as I look :))
I keep hoping that one day they'll see it and let me know.

Janelle,
although I don't use camping grounds much, I think you will find them about the friendliest place on earth. Lots of people looking for a chat and giving advice. I am certain you are safer in a camp ground than a motel room.
Just go and start.
have fun

Hi Ian

Thank you for your reply :). You have given me alot of encouragement, I have heard that about camp sites, I think the main thing holding me back is i have absoltuey no clue how to camp and just need some help getting started, although it certainly is fun doing all the research and buying stuff, there is so much camping gear I could go nuts lol

Thanks again, much appreciated

Hi Janelle,
Firstly, welcome to the best sight here in Australia. You will find that almost all campers are tarred with the same brush, and that is they are decent down to earth people that all have a common interest - camping and the great Australian outdoors. We personally prefer to head for the bush, but when we have to head for a caravan park, you will find it very easy to build up a great bond with fellow campers in that park. I can guarantee that if you are having trouble with something, it will not be long before you are offered a helping hand. It doest not matter how big or small your set up is, you will have a great time and you will ask yourself why has it taken yourself so long to get the most satisfaction from the simple things in life.

Cheers
Stephen

Hi Stephen

Thank you so much for your encouragment, I know i just can't wait to get out there, I love the outdoors, fishing and photograpy so what better way to do it all then to camp. The one time i have been camping I couldn't believe how friendly everyone was, I've got a friend who camped round WA and they were offered help every time, even got invited for dinner and so forth, just amazing

Would you know of any good books or would you just suggest I get out there and see what I can find?

Thanks again

Take Care

Hi Janelle,
I find that if you are going to a place that you have not visited before, where possible try to find out as much as possible on what to see and do in that place before you arrive. The best thing that you can do is research the route that you intend to take. In that way, you will hopefully not miss out on seeing the things and places that suit your requirement. It all comes down to planning.
How often have you heard people say, do you see this or did you do this, after you have been to that special place.
Just ask members on this site any question that you like and you will be surprises how much valued help that you will receive, from people that have been there and done that.

Cheers
Stephen

Welcome Janelle, You will find a lot of good info on this site one area to look at is the members area and the up coming trips(to meet like minded people).
The hardest thing i found was what type of set up suits your camping, if by your self the bare minimum is good, you dont want to spend all your time setting up. Also dont just buy stuff because people say you need it get the basics and move on from there(do get a fridge).
A couple of female travelers that i recently spoke too who where traveling by them self said if they where around a group(s) of people and felt safe they would set up a tent, if they had a gut feeling they just slept in the car and could just drive away.

Cheers...........Steve

You could always look out for trip gatherings and go with a group of exploroz people . Look under members heading , trips/gatherings section . I am sure there would be a spare seat sometimes . Good way to find out what you need to buy and learn about 4wding assuming you dont know much . You may know more than me .

Hey Janelle, as said above you could try and hook in to an Exploroz gathering or trip, and dont be too worried about camping alone, just take a big gun

I am sure there are bushwalking clubs out there

Local councils usually have lists of clubs and associations at their libraries or ask at one of the larger adventure shops "anaconda BCF Katmandu or Mountain design"

PS a personal safety alarm is cheap insurance I have some I bought from Dick smith that put out a 160 Db scream.

They can be set up to secure tent entrances etc so you can sleep soundly.

Just remember to switch them off before getting up and going out for a short walk, especially at night :-)

welcome to the outdoors!

why not book yourself in somewhere over Christmas in a van park in an onsite van somewhere you think you would love to be. get in amongst the campers in a camp kitchen and pick up some tips while you are there. that way you learn from others experiences, dont rush out and buy gear others say is necessary but not suited to you and you may just end up staying at a spot you want to explore some more. as you learn, expand you horizons and travel further and in different locations. youmay have some difficulties leaving a booking so late now, but i bet you could find somewhere off the beaten track away from the mad holiday crowds and have fun while learning too. good luck...

And when it comes to buying camping gear Janelle, thats when the fun begins. I've never seen anything I don't want. Probably don't NEED, but really want. I started buying stuff when I was 15 and I'm just about to turn 65, and still drool in camping/fishing stores.SWMBO keeps me in check, but she can be manipulated. I just tell her that these new toys I need are solely for her comfort, and safety. I hope you have a long and adventurous camping life. Cheers.

Hi Janelle,

Not sure about camping clubs etc, but when you get your 4WD, please consider joining a 4WD Club. Even if only to learn how to use your 4WD to the best of it's capabilities. But most 4WD clubs have camping weekends, our club every now then has single women or just Mums alone for the weekend 'cos Dads away somewhere and everyone looks out for them. My wife has camped several tiimes with our club when I have been interstate and she has had a brilliant time! And just last weekend at our Xmas Party, one of members couldn't get time off to come along, but his wife and 2 daughters did! And they had a ball!!!!

Four Wheel Drive Queensland Web Page have a page called the Club List, you'll find a club near you on there!

Cheers

HI janelle
I am sure you will enjoy camping, a few ideas maybe
Just buy a small (cheap tent) which you can handle yourself a fold up chair & table (quality) esky, gas portable cooker saucepan & most caravan parks have barbis. Plus roll up or mattress sleeping bag. Just short stays to work out what u need and prefer at first staying at caravan parks/camping grounds. And if you need a hand ask.
you will enjoy

I agree Janelle, keep it simple to start with.

I would seriously consider a self inflating mattress though as opposed to an air bed or similar.

It is really beaut getting out and about in the great south east.

Enjoy...
