Hi all
I'm looking at buying my first UHF for my Patrol and after some research and budget constraints I'm thinking of buying the GME TX3220 which at the moment comes with a bonus handheld all up at my local Autobarn
shop for $349
Has anyone had experience with this model.
Also I'd appreciate any suggestions for an aerial and best mounting postions
Thanks in advance
Cheers
Dax

I have one but am yet to mount it in the Patrol. I will be using it as a back-up and 2nd comms unit behind the TX4400 I've had for some time. I'm trying to keep all radio comms in the one area so for me it's the centre roof mounted console. Both UHF's, the HF, Satphone and EPIRB all live in the one area where they can be reached in case of emergency like a rollover.
The effectiveness of the radio will depend on proper instillation, earthing on the type of areal and mounting position. Usually, gutter mounted on the roof will give you more height and less interference but can be at some risk when outback. If you are mounting on the bullbar, get a spring mounted areal as it will allow it to bend in heavy scrub or if you run into something like a low carport roof etc.
I did a quick search on google and came up with them a damn site cheaper than what you've been quoted.
HERE's one example that includes an areal in the price. I'd have a good look round.
Cheers
Mick

Hi Dax, Ive got a small hearing problem, dont know what its called but any background noise eg music, chatter and even road noise seems to cancel out any person trying to talk to me.
I have the 3220 and its the only radio Ive found that is clear, crisp and fully audible.
The missus loves it too, doesnt have to put up with me saying...
"What did they say" every time the radio lights up.
Cheers.....Lionel.

Not a bad radio. As with all GME's the microphones will dust up and cease to work effectively. Replaceable for $30+. Dont have it in a dusty environment, the screen is very susceptible to dust with a $100 fix.
As has mentioned before, you can pick it up for alot less than $349.
Me personally, I wont use Prestige, but that is based on a bad experience, some underhand dealings and an innapropriate exchange of words.
Good luck, good quality radio with excellent clarity and simple use. The manual also indicates an optional mic that has the channel and volume controls on the hand peice, may be worth pursuing. Just beware of dust.

Hi Everyone
Gee thanks very much for the quick responses and suggestions, I've been checking out all the suggestions/advice provided and at the moment it looks like Contact Communications has the best deal, $297 with a TX670 handheld (which my son is already eying off) plus free postage.
I've been Googling all afternoon and haven't found anything that beats it.
This is one of the reasons I joined ExplorOz, all the helpful
feedback and everyone willing to help even the newbies.
So thanks again for all your help everyone
Cheers
Dax

Yep re the above - anything GME is quite safe re value for money - and Prestige seem to always have the best deals around (no affiliation) ...............postage is free with most purchases. Re location - a guru (who may have known what he was talking about :-o) told me that centre of the roof is premium placement. I was able to do that and it does work very
well.
My antenna is ground independent - an example at can be seen .......

4th unit down from the top
RFI Explorist 3 & 6.5db GI 4WD Antenna Package
The two antenna screw on tops allow for comms in varying terrain.
