Damnit.
17 year old Kid I know went trailbike riding yesterday - on tracks alongside the Tonkin HIghway.
Clipped the rear wheel of his mates bike - and was catapulted over the handlebars - onto the highway not wearing a helmet.
Tonight he's in RPH - in a coma - and his dads faced with the choice of turning off the machine thats keeping him alive - his chances of pulling thru are according to the doctors 1%
Where are your kids - and do they do dumb things like ride bikes without a helmet?
I hate it when crap like this happens - you can't wrap emin cottonwool and at 17 they think they are invincible.
I hope everyone elses kids are wrapped up tight at home in bed tonight!
Cheers

It doesnt have to be 17 year olds to act like kids .
My son is 45 and has worked hard with a good business but is an offroad bike enthusiast and not long back he had a smash in the bush north of
Newcastle and had to be airlifted to hospital.
He now faces a complete knee reconstruction which they will not do because of his age or at worst amputation.
He still attempts to work as hard as ever and regularly has to be hospitalised for an arthurscope to drain the knee as the leg swells up and he is immobilised.
His nickname was was The Gun and his ego made him want to prove it every time he rode.
Now he is faced with some big decisions to make as to where his life is heading.
17 Year olds know everything and are bulletproof or so they think but 45 year olds so when does a kid stop being a kid.

It will never stop.
We are programmed to take risks.
Those of us that reach maturity learn.

Sad to hear about the kid, not a decision any parent would like to be put in. I've had that call late one night from the hospital my daughter has been involved in a motor vehicle accident and we were needed ASAP. The drive seemed to take forever, at least our outcome was much better than this kid.
I'm a bit like Willem I wonder how I have made it this far with all the stupid stuff as a bulletproof youngster I and my mates got up to, now somewhat more thoughtful in what I do.
I try and pass on how to do things safely to my son but he knows it all and is bulletproof.
Anyway hope things work out for the kid and his parents.

When i was 17 my Dad knew nothing !! by the time i was 25 he had become a very wise man. My heart goes out to the family of this lad as my own son rang me and said "Dad I've hit a tree" my God your world just stops ! Had a good out come in our case t/g but i had my fair share as a kid but i survived

Sad news.....hope he pulls through.....I had a mate in a coma for months a while ago from hitting his head.......he pulled through alright. let us know how he goes.
"do they do dumb things like ride bikes without a helmet?"
No...but Ive been known to!
I actually come off my pushbike doing jumps with my son about four weeks ago and no , I wasnt wearing a helmet.
Broken ribs, heel bone and tail bone was the result.....maybe I should have been wearing full body armour?
In saying that, I dont let my kids ride anything without a helmet, it just reduces the odds.
Good luck

Terrible accident, lost a cousin down that way about 10 years ago, only 18 years old and on his older brothers 21st birthday. Had every bit of gear possible on, but unfortunatley hit a kangaroo and broke his neck. Was one of the most promising
young motocross riders in Australia at the time, Honda Australia even refunded the full price of his bike and sent a custom made small replica of his exact bike with all his details and numbers on it.
Very tragic accident, all the best to this
young fella, hope he pulls through.
Poor family face the hardest decision of their lives.

A very sad story Flywest but unfortunately all too common, we were lucky with our kids, they all pulled through OK and our son was fortunately a very mature teenager as was our girls. I can't imangine having to go through what your friends are faced with but it can happen to anyone at anytime and not just with teenagers, it can happen to any member of one's family/friends.
We wish your friends the strength to get through this very rough time, and also the hope that things turn out better than expected.
Cheers
