There was a thread here a while back on thermos efficiency. Can't seem to find it??
I purchased a Thermos brand (from BCF). Went to Carols by Candlelight last night.
Did all the stuff like preheating the thing. Made up boiling water. But within (say) 3 hours the water was just warm??
Any suggestions..

Your on the ball Mark !

Gas ingress can make them very poor very quick , some come that way from shop. I'd exchange it , good condition ones should
be able to make black coffee to hot to drink for 12 hours in unit
is out of the wind Signman.

Robin,

I read those threads with great interest as I back country ski a little and a good flask is vital.

I had a great run out of a Thermos branded glass one, but dropped it a while ago and haven't had the opportunity to replace it.

I did wrap it in a layer of closed cell foam, however and that saved it from a few 'little' knocks but it finally succumbed.

Now, what to buy??????

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark & Signman

Those posts were essentially about proving wrong advertizing and labelling on a product and actually having the company admit that it was wrong in writing at the end of the day.

In the end I ended up with the best flask I have ever tested under, which came as a free gift and thank you from the company concerned.

It seems like I got a one off flask though and so I can't reccomend any flask to keep water at > 60c for more than 24 hours.

The model I brought is steel and fairly rated at 12 hours hot .
Not aware of any that claim more these days.

If I was to go thru the process again I would begin with buying something I could take back and exchange easily and I would test it.
I'd also look for one with larger volumne and low surface area - short & fat instead of tall and skinny.

On your closed cell foam Mark - that works to for me in a small way - and I actually extended the hours mine keeps water hot by a simple trick - after looking at mine with an Infra-red camera its major heat loss was around the neck. A closed cell foam stubby holder now sits over the screw on cup and is just the right size to extend down past the neck.

S,

I've never come across a Steel one that keeps water hot for very long.

The best ones are the cheapies with the glass inside.

Cheers,

Jim.

Had a job that required camping for a couple of weeks at a time. and we used the thermos brand steel ones.
used to fill them with hot water in the morning for coffees etc and then the following morning (freezing nights in bushland East of Salmon gums one of WAs coldest spots)
I would use the water for my sponge bath and it would still be too hot to touch I would have to wave the flannel through the air to cool it sufficiently

Bought a genuine 'thermos' brand years ago, very disappointed in it. Ended up in the cupboard, not used.
I was browsing in the shop some years later, looking at other brands and was approached by the salesman. I told him of my disappointment in the thermos brand, and he said to check the date stamp on the bottom as they have a 5 year warranty.
Yep, I had a month or two left, and the shop exchanged it with no questions of purchase place or receipt etc. All they needed was the date stamp.
The new one is beaut, no dramas at all.

Check the date stamp, and change it under warranty if you can.

cheers

I bought a good one, cant recal if it was thermos or stanley but was useless, 3hrs = too cold for a cuppa

dont want a glass one as i am too rough

bought a "totonka" brand recently and it is FANTASTIC, the water would be hotter in 12 hours than the other one was in 3 hours.

I had a proper you beaut Thermos brand one and it worked really well for about 2 months... but somewhere along the line it must have had a drop or something as it just stopped insulating and when I wanted a hot soup or something the most I had luke warm soup instead.. Grrrrr

Now I just don't use one as they cost too much and don't last long enough..

Wish I knew about the warranty though as I just got angry and threw mine out and it would have been under warranty then too.

Hi Signman, not starting a Nissan/ Toyota thing here LOL, but our son bought us a "Nissan Stainless" thermos that long ago I can't remember when it was (well over ten years) and it is great, we take it whenever we are travelling in the country and it is always hot, keeps that way for over 12 hours, it is still quite warm after 24hrs, so all in all we are happy with that one.

Got no idea where he got it from, in fact not sure if they still exist.

Cheers

D,
Same with us. We bought a "Nissan" Thermos 1.8 litre about 7-8 years ago from David Jones for about $100, and it still works very well. It has a nice narrow spout which seems to help.

Haven't seen them lately. Our second Thermos is a wide mouth one with a press button top and its pretty much useless.

Yep that looks like it, but ours looks a bit more battered than that as it just gets thrown in the vehicle where ever there is room, ours also has the name on the side.

Cheers
