Hi, I'm currently hunting for a 2nd hand Toyota Hilux Diesel, current model, and am having trouble deciding whether to pay $6,000 extra for an SR5, or just go for the SR.
I like the extra creature comforts of the SR5, but I am worried about the 15" wheels. I want to do slight mods to make it more off-road capable - 2" lift, and some good AT tyres on 16" rims.
I've read the SR5 hase a 15" rim with unusual offset. Also read I may have problems with insurance if I fit oversize tyres. Read it was a real PITA. However the forums were a couple years old. Is this still the case or is there a reasonable choice of 16" rims and matching tyres on the market by now?
I am thinking of just getting some steel rims. But it does make me wonder if the SR is actually a better choice for a 2" lift and AT tyres seeing it has 16" steel rims to start with. specially since my camper trailer (Cavalier) has 16" rims.
Seems to me, by the time I fit bullbar, towbar, canopy, cruise control, 16" rims & tyres, and a decent stereo system to an SR, there's not going to be much difference from a SR5, and I miss out on the wheel size problem. Main difference is gonna be carpet vs vinyl floor.
Any thoughts or wisdom would be really appreciated

I have always known the NSW RTA rules were that you could fit 1" wider and 1" taller rims bigger than the largest factory fitted wheel for that type of vehicle.
So if a variant comes out with 16" rims, then you can fit them without a problem, and 17" rims legally if you wanted.
I would call your roads authority and your insurance company and clarify this, and if it still is the case, ask for them to email it to you so you can print it out and keep it on file.
Cheers!

The 16" stock rim on the SR is not much good for you anyway as it is only 6" wide so it is a very restrictive size as it is so narrow. elieve it or not this is the same rim and trye combination that was on my 1992 Suzuki Vitara!
I bought an SR new in Feb and immediately swapped the stock rims and tyres over for a set of SR5 rims (15"x7") and put some 31x10.5 inch AT's on it while I could get a trade in on the factory rubber. There is an awful lot of misinformation about tyre sizes out there, try and find a good 4WD specialist tyre
shop and be guided by them. 31"s are legal.
A lot of guys put on 16x8" rims as aftermarket 15" rims don't give clearance for the disc brake caliper. I am going to try and stick with the stock rims because 15" rubber is usually cheaper, I'll just have to keep to a narrower tyre size. With my Tough Dog lift, I am pretty sure I could get 33x10.5" tyres under my rig if I ever decide to buy a set of play tyres.
Personally for me, the SR5 did not add any value over the SR. I'm quite happy with vinyl floors and have swapped out the factory stereo and put on an ARB rear step bar. I've got the auto, so I still got cruise control. The only thing that the Toyota specs don't tell you is that the SR5 has ADD on the front axle which uses vacuum and electrics to engage/disengege drive at the Diff end of the front axle when 4wd is selected. The SR doesn not have this. Neither truck has frewheeling hubs and the ADD is a poor substitute anyway.
Have a wander over to www.newhilux.net and introduce youself. Search there and you'll find a wealth of info on the new hilux. If you search for "Rod's New Rig" you should find my build up thread and that will give you a good idea of what can be done to an SR.

If he did go for aftermarket 16x7" rims, he could fit 285x16" tyres....

Which would probably be marginally illegal give the stock 205R16 is only a 29" tyre and that will come in at around 31.7" or > 50mm. Second hand SR5 rims are a dime a dozen, (ie cheap, I picked up a steel one for $30) and have the right offset and will support a good off road tyre. If you were to upgrade to a 16" rim, the 8" width would be more flexible. Not sure if you can find a 16x7 with the right offset.
I think the hilux SR5 has a 30mm offset and there is an 8" rim with a 0 offset which works OK. You'd just have to
check the track does not increase by more than 25mm to stay legal because of the Hilux's independent front
suspension. Long and the short of it is I am happy with what I've got on my car, is factory and am not really up on this stuff.
Oh and I forgot, the speedo reads under by about 10% from the factory and is spot on with 31" tyres. (Call me a cynic, but I think this is becasue Toyota only has to offer a 99,000 km warranty to kep costs down and still comply with the ADR's).

My Toyota has 31s and now over reads by about 4%.
So its not a Toyota thing, i think its more innocent thing like making a car whose speedo under reads by less than 10% from when the factory tyres are new to when they need replacing. Just an idea...

Hmm that last follow up was written by me at just after 7am my time. I was a bit groggy still :-)
On more careful reading of your input - thanks rodweb - checked your buildup - you seem to be having a great time buying stuff. Car looks great - hope to get there one day!
So after some thought it looks to me like the following:
The best option if I got an SR5 would be sticking with standard rims - looks like I can fit eg cooper 265/70 R15 AT/Rs. These have 30.64"OD - just under legal limit. then I could get some 2nd hand 15" rims for my campertrailer, and fit same tyres all round.
On the other hand, if I got an SR i need to get aftermarket 16x8" rims (or some 16x7 prado GXLs if i can find them - thanks Jimbo) , then I can fit 245/75R16 (OD 30.49"), or 265/70R16 - either of which are legal & good matches with trailer as is.
Is there anything wrong with that reasoning? Either of those should fit under the car without a lift - right?
Cheers
