We are heading off in about 5 weeks for a lap of the big island but we want to see the little one while we are at it.

While we are doing an anti-clockwise lap, we are heading south out of Skidney first to take in the High country and then other parts of Victoria while the weather is too hot to head north.

Is there any difference in seeing Tasmania during February as opposed December??

I don’t know if I want to do it at the start or the end of the trip. Given the cost of just getting over there my head says go at the end in case the funds are drying up..

I can always head back there from Skidney for a regular 4 week holiday at another time if money is tight.

Cheers

It would probably be less busy in February.

The best weather is Feb/March and a little of April. Head over after the shoulder rates start. The other way to get good value out of your fares is to go just before the peak season and come back after the peak season (the peak season is 15 Dec to 23 Jan.) However you have left it a bit late for that option. Site Link

Don't under estimate how much there is to see and do in Tasmania. Like for you, it was a destination for us while weather was too hot to be up north. We ended up spending 6 months there and still don't think we saw it all! We were there mid October to mid April.

I've been in both Feb & Dec...

I went in search of a little deer hunting and trout fishing!

The deer thing was good in Feb and the trout was good up at great lakes round Dec (albeit we got snowed on one day).

Both times are lovelly in Tas and ypou'll love it -more water round in Dec than Feb but Tas is not a place shortof water at any time

best a luck!

Cheers

actually, Tassie is in the middle of a severe drought, not quite the same as the one here but still a drought, while there's plenty of green stuff and water in the pretty lakes around the touristy places, once you start looking at farms and reading the local papers you soon realize they're having a hard time too, specially if you have family there

Hi Joff

We had a fantastic seven weeks in Tasmania in 2006, going across mid Feb and returning early April. We just missed the school holiday crowds. The weather was glorious, although the nights were getting chilly towards the end. We missed seeing snow by one day. My trip notes are in My Blog.

We chose to go to Tasmania first, then take tours of the rest of Australia when we can. We prefer to travel without a tight plan, but for Tasmania we had two deadlines - the boat there and the boat back. It was expensive, but i booked in time to take advantage of a 'ship saver' fare and another 'special'. We went over by day and returned on a night crossing.

I would opt for going first. Then you can economise if need be when doing the mainland lap.

Hi Zacc

It was over tow years ago - we paid just over $1200; for day crossing and night return with porthole cabin. We had a Patrol and 18' (internal measurement) caravan. Check out the Spirit of Tasmania website, but you have to ring them with rig measurements for accurate quote.

Or way better, go to Sorell Market for bargains and avoid the tourist stuff.

Any time is fine! I've travelled Tassie in mid winter and found it beautiful! The only drawback is that they foolishly close down some tourist outlets.
Dry on the central easter side, warmer on the north east coast, wet and windy on the western coast.

Thanks for all that.

Another question, who has taken kids (10 - 13yo)? How did they like it?

I ask because I have driven all over Tas a few times for work and always thought it would be a great place for the wife and I for a 2 week holiday on my bike but, it never struck me as a place the kids would enjoy too much.

My kids like the hot deserts and the warmer climes of the Qld coast as they invariably get to take a dip in some water hole or pool after being dragged all over some walking trail.

Thoughts?

You know your kids best.. but surely you have asked them?
Mine were just that age when we first toured Tassie. Boy 13 girl 11, they loved it and travelled Tas with me alternately for the next few years. But they loved travelling anywhere in Oz. Take them up the top of Mt Wellington to experience the Arctic blast of wind up there...

My Son beat me down the hill on his bike... I couldn't catch him in the car!
