Need some advice please, would the 3.0 ltr turbo diesel tow a 25ft caravan comfortably, or would it be wiser to get the 4.2 motor. Bit of a difference in cost, but if the smaller motor would struggle theres not much point getting one. Thanks for your help in advance.

G'day Curlynan,
the 3 ltr has a 3 tonne towing capacity so the answer is yes. Whether it'll tow it comfortably is another matter all together. I have the 3 lt GU wagon. If I was doing what you intend doing, I'd go a turbo 4.2 for sure.
Another good site for info is the Nissan Patrol
forum.
Here is the
LINK.
Cheers Mick

You do not say if it is manual or auto.
Auto is limited to 2500 kgs.
Manual is rated at 3000 kg.

The 3ltr in auto as said would only just be up to it. Go for the 4.2ltr.
Without getting too involved, the 3 ltr also has a history, especially re towing. See my blog.
Cheers Colin.

On paper, they both have almost the same power and torque, the 4.2 have a much better reputation however, and are old school, have fun trying to find a good thuogh, those who have them aren't real inclind to part with them now they are obsolete.

What is the weight of your caravan fully loaded? What is the gross mass - car loaded for trip plus caravan, plus yourselves? Check these against the species for each vehicle.

DONT DO AS MANY DO (let the tail wag the dog)
As an interstate truck driver I see far far too many big vans with all the toys onboard being towed by little 4wd .
They cant maintain an even speed on the highway some as low as 50kmhs and when I come up on them and have to pull up in a big hurry beacause they are sooooo slow my wife hates washing my undies....
(yes my truck is speed limited and yes it is conected and I havent had a speeding ticket in many a year doing over 50,000 kms per year)
Its not really a laughing matter as it can be down right dangerous many a time.
The sway they can get up when we finally get the chance to pass(i have had my rig in the gravel on the righthand side to avoid killing them when passing a swaying van) because the tow car is too small both in size and weight for the job.
Big in weight is better when using a tow vehicle with 20ft and above vans

Hi Curlynan
We tow our van ok, with the Nissan, we sit on the 100k mark when
on the highway, we dont flog it, I allways watch the revs,
I would say with a 25ft van fully loaded you would be at maximum
effort, with no power to spare.
Cheers

Out there to enjoy not have problems.

Hey
Laura
I've been away so what was the outcome with the GU. If your stuck with it, don't give up hope as I think I have finally, after 6 years, sorted out the issues I have had with
mine. It is also generally cheaper to repair what you have than replace what you have.

We are going thru fair trading to have something done. The mechanic in
wollongong couldnt fault the car - but the computer had been swiped between us handing hte keys over to Craig and the mech getting the car......strange seeing that the light was coming on just days before it went up there. Now Craig is refusing to fix it because "his" mechanic cannt fault it......anyway.....one thing has led to another and the paper work is being done but I know noting will really happen until atleast mid Jan (being xmas etc).
Ill keep ya posted but thats it so far.....Craig isnt wanting to replace anything nor refund us or replace the car.....

Hi Curlyman As you may or maynot know the 3llr does have a history.Ours is a 2003 manual towing a 22ft van and it does it easy
(130,000ks)I do have a d/chip fitted and that made a big difference.Depending on conditions we get between 14-18ltrs
per 100ks at up to 105p/h.the end result is we are very happy
with the performance with the truck, with not many problems.
The main problem is MR.NISSAN who have very little idea of how to diagnose any faults.
Cheers Barry
