Hi All,
I am looking to purchase a diesel 4x4 Hilux ute. My criteria is it must be very fuel efficient and be an extra cab utility. I would like it to have a winch, hard top and long range
tank to tour Oz. My main requirement is fuel efficiency. Can someone tell me what year the Hilux common rail diesel was released as I have searched the web and cannot find out. Also any helpful advice would be most appreciated. I have just sold my HJ75 with the lot that I have had for 15 years to my son. I am now retired and my wife and I want to tour Oz including Simpson and
Kimberley's.

As a guess the common rail was introduced with the new model in 2005

Yes 2005 I believe, and I think all the common rail toyota's are identified by a 'D4D' badge on either side right front quarter panels.

Ye as the others have said it was 05; March 05 was the first Hilux with common rail engine I have 4x4 diesel double cab tray top, and towing 1100 kg caravan at best 10l to 100km at worst strong cross wind 13l to 100k at about 90 to 95 just like any others 4x4 will use fuel if you have a BIG right foot

Thanks for that detail Nomadoz. The one thing I am not going to do is tow anything. I sometimes towed a 4x4 trailer with my Troopy and always found it a pain when you really wanted to do some rough stuff and especially the extra fuel and braking you have to allow for. From what you say I could roughly expect to get around 8l per 100km with normal non lead foot driving. That would be around 9l 100km better than my turbo Troopy which averaged 16.5l 100km at 100kph. At that rate I should travel around twice as far on the same fuel.

I think 8L is a bit too optimistic, toyo claim about 8.6, but realistic, more like 9 to 9.5, as my 10L 100, must admit was 400k of tail wind, I would suggest the first thing to do is put some guard to protect the radiator from any sticks , the rest I’m sure you be very happy with it .
You can put uhf without drilling any holes and fridge in back
seat with easy, can send you pic if you need it.

Yes my auto D4D Dual Cab has averaged 11.1 over 80,000kms. 700km's from a
tank is about it. (76 Litres with 4-5 litres left over)
