I have noticed a spinning noise when i turn off my engine. Found it to be the idler pulley on the air con drive belt is spinning upto 30 secs after the engine has stopped.

I figure the pulley doesnt actually do anything except maybe keep the belt from hitting other parts of the engine if the air con is adjusted wrongly.

Has anyone else noticed this??

Hi Neilbis,
My Hilux does exactly the same thing, and has been for the 5 years I have owned it. Maybe something to do with the length of the alternator belt, how much it is stretched.

Ive never looked at a 5L idler ,but normally the idler is the adjuster and the belt should be tight around the idler

the idler pulley is for the air con drive belt. The belt goes around the crankshaft pulley the air con compressor and a tensioner pulley. The idler puller is on the "outside" of the triangle between the air con and the crankshaft.

Thats why i figure it would only be there to stop the belt hitting/rubbing on something. The service manual has it on a diagram but doesnt mention it anywere

Anyways will drop into toyota and see what they reckon

These are very easy to fix.

Just remove the retaining nut behind the pulley with a good 14mm (?memory) ring spanner, and then remove the assy from its bracket.

Then remove the circlip, and press the bearing out, go to cbc, and get another one (under 5 bucks), and refit.

Or, when I did mine, I realised that I could have just gently removed the rubber/ nylon seal, and cleaned , and repacked it, and then put the seal back on carefully and it would have been fine for another 200k.

trains,

the idler pulley was replaced about 3 months old. The bearing is fine.

My only worry was more that when the engine is stopped the air con drive belt doesnt touch it ( when the engine runs for a while, the belt obviously flexs and touches it causing it to spin like its meant to). This means when you turn off the engine the pulley keeps spinning as theres no resistance (except in the bearings which eventually stops it, 15 seconds later))
