After looking inside a late model mercedes bogie drive truck today, I'm starting to think theres a heap of areas where companys can further develope a 4wd. If you are worried about electrics now!, then don't be , because i think theres a lot more to come, especially in transmission areas, It may be a case of what button to press!!, then just steer the thing...lol.

Cheers Axle.

I've recently driven current model Mercedes & Volvo trucks and electronics in these machines are mind boggling.
Clutch pedals are soOOOoo 20th century!, All electronically controled, still they are a manual gearbox, they do everything them selves, really trick bit of kit.

I was the second driver in Australia in 1988 to drive the second twin-stear Benz in NSW, the other was in WA, and on our maiden voyage to Brisbane I was pulled up by our RTA in Ballina and booked for not locking the rear-wheels, twin axles.

Well, how would it, it had ABS system, the Highway Patrol from Ballina slapped a defect sticker to my windscreen and I had 7 days to comply.
So off to Brisbane Benz Truck dealer, I had all the mechanics swarming over the truck, as this truck was the second one in our country, they were very interested in the set-up with the extra fuel-filters, my boss Greg put an extra 6 filters on the fuel-lines.

Well to cut story short, a 3-way hook-up between Benz QLD, RTA NSW and Greg, after manager of Benz QLD told the RTA in no uncertain terms that they just spent $650 MILLION perfecting the ABS system and these boofheads slap a defect notice on his truck and if the sticker is not removed in 24 hrs, Benz will take RTA to Court and really stick it up them.

On my return journey, the same police removed the sticker, while shaking their heads wondering why I was so special. Great truck, extra pay-load, 16 tonnes

Hey Axle, I reckon 4x4s, like most forms of fashion, will continue to evolve to the point where the only option left to the manufactures is to go back to basics.

Imagine in say 20-30 years time 4x4s will be equipped with carbs, points, rotors, low range, manual trannies, leaf springs, casette players, solid chassis and the fuel economy of a Kenworth.

They will be built with steel that doesnt buckle as you polish it.
It will have the ability to go off-road.
It will not pop pistons after 100,000 kms.
It will not have idiot lights telling you stop because your washer bottle is low.

It will encourage the return of the 'bloke' the 'adventurer' the 'trailblazer' back to 4x4ing instead of the mamby-pamby, mummy which way do we go, that looks too rough, I cant do the Simpson cause I havent got Coopers, Id never dream of giving the missus a clip round the ear if she refuses to change the puncture, anyone who drinks more than one stubby a week is a dead loss boozer....types.

If I hang onto the old patroll long enough it will come back into fashion and every one will want one.

By the way...the missus has often called me a SNAG.
Slovenly - Neanderthal - Antipodian - Git.

A label I wear with pride.......hehehe.

Cheers......Lionel.

For the humour impaired.......Im only joking.
The missus made me put that bit in....lol.

Hi Axle
Just thinking the same thing.
My old L/Rover series 3 will be back in fashion again, may as well keep it as it's only done 65K since 1981.
Even the service book is up to date, 60K service was done exactly 10years ago today and the 65 will be due in 300km.
It was put on blocks in late 2000 and I bought it a year ago with 63K on it.

Disco.
(her car is a TD5 Disco, I get to drive it sometimes, if I ask nicely. LOL

In 2028 there will be rumours that a replacment for the 3.0 GU Patrol will arrive in 2 years. The GU will be up to series MCMXV and it will be distinguished from the previous model by the chrome grille and door handles ( again) , and the general concensus will be that ones built after 2025 shouldn't blow pistons.

Rumour has it that the 3Lt Tirbo will be replaced by the 2.1 Meg Fusion plant. That means when she pops the No 4. piston , it also takes 8 square kilometres of the surrounding country in the ensuing explosion Ha Ha.

The main difference I expect will be all steel panels will be replaced by more plastic & carbon fibre to reduce weight. Gearbox's will be all automatics & engines will reduce in size to improve fuel econemy.

Take heart Axle , we still have the petrol Patrols , with basically the same coil / live axle setup and straight six, relatively simple engines that they had in twenty years ago in 1988 and just as many of the GQ are still going strong the current GU's will still be able to be be had in another 20 years.
