Hi all, hope someone can help with some advice. My GU 4.2TD has developed a bad vibration between 85kmh & 100kmh. Have changed wheels/tyres, replaced universals, balanced tailshaft, checked bushes,
suspension etc all without any improvement.
Vehicle is 2000 model with 120000k's. Has OME with 2in lift. Any ideas appreciated.

Does it go away when you are cornering, particularly in lefthanders?
If so
check panhard rod bushes. My old GQ developed a problem that started out as you have described and got so bad that I could bearly hold the wheel.
It was panhard rod bushes. A general mechanic in
Nyngan picked it up after I had spent over two years visiting all kinds of
suspension specialists. They all wanted to fix the big things and it really was something quite small.

Duncs & Coyote, don't notice any variation when turning left or right.Once started vibration remains constant up to 100/105 kmh and then goes.

The other thing it could be is disc rotors out of round or warped.
Mine was doing it at about the 120,000km mark when my mechanic recommended the discs be looked at because the pads were
well down and I had a bit of a "pump" effect under moderate braking.
I have no problems now but the wheel rotation issue does show up from time to time. Like others have said the Nissan
suspension seems quite susceptible to minor misalignment and balance issues.
Good luck with it. These issues can drive you nuts until you sought it out
Like I said before it could be something quite small. Try changing tyre pressures. At least that won't cost you anything.

I had the identical problem as Coyote with my 2000 GU 4.2 diesel Patrol. Had
suspension, tyre specialists and one Nissan dealer look at it with nothing but short lived success. However since having the car regularly serviced by another local Nissan dealer I have not had the problem in over 50 000 km. I believe the problem was remedied through tyre rotation [especially front to back] every 5000 km and correct wheel balancing - which is Nissan's recommendation anyway. I found that unless this rotation is specifically requested the dealers, during the 5000/10000 km
services - generally put the better tyres on the front which are - up to a certain km - the front tyres themselves. I hope this helps.

Lynton B, thanks for info. I agree with your comments re rotation at
services-have the same issue. Are you running original steel wheels?

Yes DC am running on original steel rims. Do you suppose a problem exists there? Regards LB

I have two sets of wheels. Original 17" Alloys with original tyres on - wobble happens, now have brand new tyres on original rims.. wobble still happens, I also have a set of 17" steel rims with "Bush" tyres on.. wobble still happens.
I am 100% sure it is not my tyres or my rims or my wheel allignment or my wheel balance as all have been checked and rechecked etc..

Gday dune sorry for the late reply but always look at issues with 4.2 nissans
mate i had i similar issue after the lift kit and fatties went on but vibration was around 120k s and could not get the steering wheel straight with wheel alignments
as the lift had moved the rear diff to the left therefore the tailshaft was outa line and rear wheels too
easy fix with adjustable panhard rod however patrols are mogrels to keep wheels balanced
mine still has a mnor steering wheel shimmy around 90ks
hope this helps Cheers

I have been told that Patrols are set up for left hand drive roads (ie, roads cambered to the opposite side to us. I have been advised to get a kit installed that offsets the suspension/ alignment the other way. Not sure exactly but I think it was about $1200..
To my way of thinking, if this is the case then whay aren't all patrols doing this and then if so, why doesn't Nissan address it. I should not have to spend $1200 to get my car to drive in a straight line FFS...
