With the cost of fuel still above the dollar a litre and 4cylinders cheaper to register, I am considering replacing the old environmentally unfriendly 4.2 with the much newer and cleaner ZD30. I have shopped around and can pick up a second hand low K's (110,000klm) for a few grand. I could sell the 4.2 for about 10k and still be in front.
What do you all think
Maybe Kiwi would be interested in doing a swap?
Cheers Luke

What a great idea!! I know where there's a complete 3.0L GU, it's just sitting in a backyard in "Lizzibif", so he might sell it to ya cheap...
Happy Hunting!
Cheers, Brad

If you are on a fishing expedition then the moderators of this site will get you, although I hate the new
forum moderator attitide!
If you honestly are unaware of the problems with the ZD30 engine {hey, I drive one! } then lots of people on this website will put you straight.
If, however, you are fully aware of the mighty indestructable ZD30 then I can only say this.......any engine conversion of any kind is fraught with danger.
It will ultimately cost much more than you could ever imagine and in the end the only person who wins from an engine coversion is the person who buy's it from you for much less than it's cost you.
ASK ROACHIE!!!

Don't bring me into this mass-debate..... everyone knows my thoughts on the ZD30.....if I could find one with a straight body I'd snap it up......half the cylinders and less than half the capacity of the 6.5 Chev. They have lots of computer gadgets to control everything (so that nothing can ever go wrong).... so I'm amazed there are soooooooooooo many people who DON'T own a GU 3.0 to be honest.
If you find a nice one, let me know.......

Roachie, what I'm trying to say is you got that patrol with the engine conversion for far less than it would've cost had you done it yourself.
I have no idea how much your Patrol cost you, and it's none of my business, but I bet the guy who sold it to you lost a fair bit of money.

Luke,
Have you actually run the figures?
I was looking at replacing my 2.8 in mt paj with the newer 3.2 paj diesel. Same block, so it "bolts straight in", then only need to alter the intercooler, the throttle to fly by wire, the ......, and the list goes on.
Say work on 10 years for the figures.
If you do all of the work yourself, and there are no outlays for any parts, which I doubt, and you save 2 to 3l/100k. At 30,000k per year, that is a saving of 600 litres of fuel. Say $600/yr., $6,000.00 over 10 years.
How much more is to maintain the 3.0l than the 4.2?
Have you costed a fuel pump overhaul and injector replacement.
Let alone a turbo overhaul.
Over 10 years you most probably will have to replace the 3.0l again. The 4.2 won't need replacing.
Don't see how you are ahead swapping :o)
If you are so concerned about the environment, why are you driving a big 4wd?

Na, we put it to Craig out of curiosity and he refused, saying that it was worth a hell of a lot more than the patrol....pigs a$$...!! its $3 - $4k less in trade in's and private sale compared to our grenade according to redbook......Craig then had the hide to sya he had never heard of redbook.....!!! Nathan just laughed at him!

So I'm guessing you still have the Grenade then
Laura? Have you sought any advice from fair trading or the small claims tribunal?

Luke
The Nissan ZD30 engine has a very chequered history,
mine is still going strong after 170,000km but I am aware they are also aptly named the hand grenade. In hindsight I would have bought the 4.2 and taken it to one of these reputable diesel
places that do the upgrades for a few grand. Bigger two stage turbo, intercooler, 3" exhaust etc. These conversions give you more power, and when you are not sinking the boot in using those extra horses, make the engine more economical on the diesel. Mind you if the price difference between petrol and diesel gets much larger, you could stick a Holden V8 under the bonnet and still be in front.
Cheers
Snowy
