G'day all you geniuses!
Have any of you had any algae growth problems with clear hose for filling
water tanks in caravans?
Our new Jayco has clear hose and I always thought that light encourages algae.
I know keeping tanks full is the way to go.
Educate me
Regards
Brendan

Brendan,
I carry all my
drinking water in the back of my Troopy and only use the
tank for washing, when I come home I drain the
tank and leave it dry.
There are pills you can buy that get rid of any bugs if you use you jayco
tank for all and sundry.

Thanks, I have heard of others doing the same.
Maybe filling the tanks with Bourbon might be better!

It will happen with clear hoses.
I just slip that split Black plastic tubing(electrical) over the clear plastic and it stops it.

1. Enclosing the hose in Convuluted Split Tubing
2. Second option is to drain the
tank and hose whenever not in use
3. Chlorine tabs also work.

I didn't think of that, might look into it.
I guess the black plastic outer would also help protect the pipe aswell.
Thank you

When using the Convuluted Split Tubing be sure to tape the ends and along the outside with electrical tape every 6 inches or so, to prevent it blowing or falling off.

Hi Brendan,
I assume that you are talking about the 12mm hoses that transfer the
water from your
tank to the sink etc.
The manufacturer you mention does this alot. I have come across this problem several times with their vans.
The hose is supposed to be fresh
water pottable. The beverage tube used is not! Any way not for long periods.
There are many quick fixes however the best way is to do it properly.
Get hold of some NYLEX fresh
water hose that they use on caravans for fresh
water transfer when in caravan parks and replace all the hoses with that. There are several others on the market, use only Nylex - no more troubles.
Dont forget to wash out your
tank as some of the algae may have got into that.
Been there done that
Tony

Bredan
Had exactly the same problem with a clear plastic balance pipe I had between my two rainwater tanks at home. After doing a bit of research there is nearly always oxygen in the
water, sunlight can get to it because the pipe is clear and algae can grow. I have since replaced the pipe with a yellow & black rubber one, and have checked it a couple of times since, four months on, no algae problems.
