Fraser Island

Hi there everybody, I am traveling up the QLD coast for a while and was considering making a day trip to Fraser Island.

I am not one to jump in on this without consideration and planning so I wanted to ask some questions about the island and getting around.

I am a novice 4wd'er, I have a 99 pathfinder that runs dual fuel LPG and Unleaded so I get decent mileage.

What I wanted to know is this,

1) What is the distance driving to Lake Mckenzies from kingfisher bay
2) What is the drive in and out like as in track condition?
3) Are there any good sites with driving directions to get around? (I have found many sites with maps but nothing descriptive about specific distances)

And finally if there are any other pointers about how to get around safely it would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Have a look here

There is a PDF map available from that site.

The map you get with the permit is pretty good.
Mckenzie from Kingfisher will take maybe an hour. It can be slow going as the tracks can get a bit rough, but it's not very far. Your Pathfinder will do it fine. Just remember to let your tyres down in the sand.
If you're doing a day trip then you won't get away from the bottom end of the island and all the tracks down that end are fairly easy.

Have fun..

...and carry a snatch-strap, a couple of "D" shackles, and a shovel:-)
Come any closer and I'll rip your throat out!

Traveling alone so do you suggest a winch with the snatch strap as well?

On Fraser a winch is not necessary. All the tracks are pretty easy and well trafficked. Always someone to snatch you out if you get stuck.

As said above, lower your tyre pressures and carry a snatch strap.

For a good book for a first timer to get their head around the Island, check out the Hema Fraser Island Atlas and Guide, available from the Exploroz shop amongst others.

It contains good maps of the whole Island and some good info to go with it including a distance chart....not a bad price also :)

BTW, the Hema maps show the distance as 18km....

Day Trip???? You won't see much in a day. Do yourself a favour and stay for at least 3 days. Even this is not enough. I have been going there for 20 years and still have not seen everything. Take a light aircraft flight over the Island and you will see what I mean.
