Coming home , (there was a squeal starting, sounds like bearing),
pulled over to check what was going on, nothing underneath to be seen.
Started off again and it started to scream, so pulled over, thinking that I would shift the vechile of the road I backed into a clear spot, No noise in reverse!!!!
This noise is only when the vechile is moving.
Got me stumped!
The vechile is a courier t/d 11.2005. Dual cab.

bushy

For that sort of squeal, I generally have to get a helper to stand outside the car and listen to help me pinpoint where the squeal is coming from.

My ever loving has had considerable practice over the years.

Did you look underneath to make sure nothing is caught up, twisted around etc?

If you are in the NRMA, RACX etc you can get them out to do a diagnosis and tow the vehicle short distance if necessary, all for free.

Fact that its not in reverse makes me think its maybe not real serious, because i have never heard of a gearbox bearing squealing. Maybe a stick caught in the drive line.

Could be a loose fan belt, air con or power steering belt, they can squeal like mad, but you get that by revving the engine in neutral, and should happen in reverse.

Good hunting

Max still made the noise with the engine off when winched onto the truck!
Seems to come from the front , but not from the wheels, nothing appears to be caught up underneath so its got me stuck!!!!!!
thanks Bushy.

Some brake pads have a tell tale device to let you know when your pads are getting down. That may be the squeal you describe.

Cracked exhaust Manifold. Squeals like a bearing and very common with that model engine 2.5TD with intercooler. You will need to look from under the car and remove some of the manifold covers.

My 100 series developed a similar noise last week, squealing and scraping noise from the left hand rear, i was outside listening while SWMBO drove, only did it in forward, not reverse. was coming from the handbrake drum in the disc. pulled it off and found a small flattish rock about 10mm square stuck in the top of the brake shoe.i had broken a small amount of material off but nothing to worry about.identify would be the first call. cheers Paul

Check for a small branch or twig stuck underneath near the tailshaft. Otherwise just jack up one wheel at a time and turn it round so you know where to look more closely.

Like the reply with the small stone I have had a similar thing happen on my Landcruiser. Drives you nuts! but hopefully it will be nothing to worry about.

Robnicko, checked all the drive train when I stopped and could not find anything, but the stone theory rings bells.

Hi Bushy

Had the same problem with my 80 series on newly paved road and it was a small rock caught on the top of the disc pad. When going forward it squealed like fingernails on a blackboard. Took the wheel off and flicked it out, no more noise.

Cheers Rod

I,d be looking at the tin shield behind the rotor , sounds like a stone caught between the two ,they usually squeal going for ward and not in reverse . quite often if you drive in reverse for a bit it will fall out .
