Hi all, I am looking at buying one of the Bushwinch wheel mounted drums kit for vehicle recovery, looks like a local Perth crowd have developed them a while back, I can remember seeing them at the Camp/4wd show a couple of years back. Was just wondering if anyone of the Exploroz community have any comments pros/cons regarding this product, Cheers. Kanga1[url=http://bushwinch.com.au]

We had a demo of them on a club 4WD run a while back. I didn't make that trip, but no-one was impressed enough to buy one at their asking price. It seems they have their uses, but not as versatile as a hand winch, or as easy as an electric winch.

Cheers

Hey Kanga,

As Captain mentioned ... versatility is an issue ... as is the amount of gear you need to make them work effectively in more than perfect circumstances.

I'm pretty sure I wouldnt be the only one on this forum that had home made ones of the things ... a 100yrs ago lolol ...

Worked great on sand and in muddy paddocks / tracks. Two drums for directional control or one on the front for a guide helps big time. A long cable anchored at both ends with loops around the drum gives you a "road" to drive along. This used to happen with up to 8mm steel cable of course - Dunno how the little nylon string stuff would go.

Needed lots of storage space and plenty of time to make it all work - good opportunity to put the billy on, of course.

In the end ... ditched all the drums / double, welded rims etc ... kept the cable and bought a tirfor.

With all the cheap, high capacity electric and hydraulic winches available today .... I know what I'de be looking at.

Remember too that the wheel studs have enough trouble holding the wheels on these days without stressing them further!

Cheers Guys, I have a Terrain Tamer Tirfor, maybe I'll just stick with it, it's always nice to be able to winch yourself backwards to good ground if needed. I thought these Bushwinch winches might be good for pulling either direction and hardly breaking a sweat, and easily transferable between vehicles, thanks again Kanga

They were discussed in the 4WD page in the Motoring section in todays edition of the Wet Australian newspaper. Wasn.t a bad write-up
