Finally a nice day in the Latrobe Valley! Had pommie cousins visiting for the last few days. Flew out day before yesterday and have the impression that our summer is just like theirs!

I would look fro another mechanic! $17K is certainly on the high side. Plenty of aftermarket kits around now for the ZD30 motor that makes it economical to rebuild - closer to the $5-7K mark.

Cheers

Crikey

I am so glad I got rid of mine and bought a 4.2 before I had to face all these problems.

What a pain in the ar**

With the propsed new Nissan I will change brands after 20 years of product support.

You get that.

Cheers

Mine was about $16K a little over 12 months ago. That included new intercooler, radiator, clutch, belt tensioner and a raft of other bit's and pieces. Got a crated 3 ltr from a dealer for $7K after some profiteering somewhere along the line (Motor went up over a grand in price between two phone calls!). Better than the $14K they wanted at most places. It's going to be expensive in any direction you head.

thats why the $25k for the 4.2 yoto motor in the old mans car seems like good value. He got a 25000km motor, 5sp auto and transfer from an 06 cruiser for $11000

Steve

I would be getting another quote. Nissan in Mt Isa quoted me $15000 for a brand new engine - on the road, which I rejected.

Finished up pulling the engine out myself. Top and bottom end looked good (except for 3 pistons). Bought "In Chassis" Rebuild Kit from Engine Australia for just over $1000 and am sloooowly rebuilding it myself. At least I'll know it's done properly!

Just wished I had known that I could have done all the work "in chassis" before I pulled the complete engine out.

Steve, the BiL has my sympathy.

Yes you can buy a 7k engine but that wont cover the other items such as fuel pump, turbo, injectors etc etc. thats just a sealed block & head, it's the other bits listed above that can add up to the big$$$$ and after spending that sort of money why would you want a turbo & fuel pump & injectors the might be 150-180000km old?

I now look on the positive with mine, at least now i have the best of both worlds and the car i always wanted, it's a ripper now.
Cheers, Colin.

I was talking to a mechanic yesterday, and he told me that you can get a full long ZD30 motor ( fuelled up ) for about $5000.

I'm not too sure about this price, but he seemed adamant about it, when I checked his price.

I'll stick to my 4.2 patrol, they are a bit of a slug, and a tad thirsty, but I can relax a whole lot more, in the knowledge that it should do 500,000 km without too many dramas.
Cheers

Hi Steve,
I personally know of a Pajero TD that's run out around this figure for some pretty comprehensive work like that.

Through some "creative" efforts they dirtied up the fuel system just recently to the tune of about $5,000

Just last week they were towing a loaded horse float up a long hill on the highway and as they crested the engine went bang.

Latest quote $10,000 for the cracked pistons, turbo and other assorted top end damage.

So I can see this being reached if the damage is extensive enough.

But I do also believe your brother in law should shop around.

Oh, the mentioned Pajero is owned by a couple of wannabe Michael Schumacher's with the mechanical ability of your average fox terrier dog.
