I did try and search this but I must be trying the wrong keywords.

We were hoping to take advantage of the cheap fuel prices and take the Triton up to Fraser Island and do the Rainbow Beach to Noosa beach run on the way back.

I'm assuming that the Triton with AT tyres suitably deflated should be okay for sand use? Yes/No Best buy a compressor as well I guess.

I've seen some of the carnage that can occur at the Rainbow end when the weather is poor. Are there times of the year to avoid, is getting past the rocks at RB the only hazard, am I nuts for doing this solo, one day or two?

Any suggestions welcome.

15,000 + people camped on the beach at this time of year = a place to avoid.

There has been a lot of carnage around the rocks at the Rainbow beach end. I went from Noosa to Rainbow in October and took the inland track which bypasses the rocks. 20 ks of bumps will bring you to the main road about 10 mins from Rainbow. As for the beach it was no harder than Fraser and yes you should buy a compressor I will upgrade my $100 one since that trip.
Stuart.

Hi
Your AT tyres will give no problem at all. Like above, you can detour the rocks at Rainbow Beach. While you are driving on the beach and the hard packed sand, it is like driving on the black stuff. Approach and water run off with caution, as quite often there can be a large lip, which if hit at speed will cause all sorts of trouble. The tracks inland on Fraser will require lower pressures and you should have no problem proving you do the right thing.

Seasons Greetings

Thanks for all that. Is the track past the rocks fairly easy to find if you come from Noosa end?

Just remember that this track can get very busy. Especially if it is high tide. It is the only way around from Rainbow to Noosa side of Double Island point.
I have met many a maniac on this track trying to impress his mates. Generally have been young guys coming/going for a surf. Even met a few dirt bikes out of control.
Just keep a lookout on tight corners.
