Had a Trader enquiry for my Trayon Camper saying, I quote, "this is mark pilger,i will like to purchase it and can u also give me the last price, thanks". Alarm bells started ringing but I replied anyway and sure enough a day later I received another email this time from a Lekan Barry reading, I quote, "Hello, thanks for the email me,And i will like to inform you that the payment will be cashier check or Money Orders in view of this i will like you to email me all the necessary information needed to send the check to you. Regarding the shipping, i have a personal shipper agent that takes good care of my consinments and ship them to there various destination...So that my shipper agent will be at your place to pick up the Items soon as the payment is received by you. The check will be in your name to make it easier for you to cash and as soon as you receive the check i will like you to cash them then deduct the money for the (Items) and send the remaining balance to my shipper agent so he can contact you immediately for the pick up arrangement at your place. so here are the information needed for the payment to mail out asap.
Full name
Mailing adress, no po box please
your direct telephone number
acceptance of my offer
Final price
Once you get back to me with all the above, the check will be issued immediately and will be sent to you.
Hope to hear from you immediately (end of quote)

So what is going to happen....?
I will be getting a cheque for more then what I asked for the balance will go to the "shipper agent" who will pick up the Items (Camper) then it will be discovered that the cheque is worthless and I would have lost my camper plus the balance of the money I gave to the "shipper agent"

The moral of the story.......don't do it, its a scam....apart from that I would hate to see my camper going to Nigeria!!!!!!

Yep, there are a tonne of them going around Adrian. They are clever at targetting the vulnerable on many occassions. Mate does consultancy work for quite a few churches in SA. He's had quite a few enquries from parishes on the best way to transfer funds to help these poor christian souls needing help to recover their millions tied up in probate in African countries blah blah. It astounds me that people are still so vulnerable to these ministrations (no pun intended). Thanks for letting us know.

Dear Nigerian Scam Artist.
As you know such scams are illegal in Nigeria. But for you, my dear friend, I can offer you an Australian Visa for only AUD 1, 000, 000 each for you and family members. You will be free to live and scam here, where it's legal to do so.

Do not worry my friend, Australia is the land of milk and honey, and stories of our laws prohibiting such activities are totally untrue.

So come to Australia my friend.Bring your friends and family. I will arrange visas for all of you.

Please send in advance AUD$500,000 as a sign of good faith. Bank transfer only, no Western Union or cheques as they have a very bad name here in Australia.

So, if you wish to keep out of jail in Nigeria(very bad) send the money NOW (very good).

Hoping that you stay out of Jail
Sincerely(!)

Ned Kelly.

Hi Adrian

Yep, this scam has been around for about 5 years. I had similar approaches when I listed my old G60 for sale here on EO

The scam works this way:

When you come to an agreement the Buyer sends you cheque for double the amount of money you are asking or thereabouts.

You bank the cheque. Australian Banks have to clear an Overseas Draft within 7 days by law(I think).

The cheque is cleared after 7 days. You draw the intended amount and send the money to a 'Shipper' somewhere.

Nothing happens. Your sale item is not collected.

About a month later when the International Draft has gone through the proper channels it 'bounces' as there are no funds available or the cheque account does not exist in the first place.

Your bank comes after you for the amount you withdrew and cancels the amount still in your bank account and you have to pay a 'dishonour' fee.

SUCKER!!!!!

And so many have been caught!!!!

Cheers

We were contacted by mail at work by one of these scams about buying our products. They were inquiring about winery QA test equipment. I actually wrote back to them and told them to F OFF! in no uncertain terms. I'm sure they understood what I meant. But some businesses in the area where we are got sucked in and were stung for several $1000's.

Adrian

Mark Pilger has been busy, he wanted to buy my item in the trader as well.

I just ignored him as the reply sounded shonky.

I never though about the cheque scam though i was more concerned about him tracking down where i live an straight out steeling of the item.

Don't reply or encourage them and report it to David (EO) who will block the scammers access to the site.

Absolutely - as John says.

This has happened to me a few times, and only from ads here on the Trader. Each time i have emailed David the details so he can block the latest scammers.

The scam is not only from Nigeria ,although it is the most common , cpl of yrs ago had a c/trailer for sale here on the trader ,bloke from the U.S.A wanted to buy , same sort of deal ,Cheque for double the price ,give remainder to agent ect ect,, had a lot of fun stringing the "buyer" along upto the point of me recieving his cheque ,then a flurry of emails from me saying wrong date on cheque ,another for unsigned ect ect and it soon became apparent the deal was not to be.

the website is http://www.419eater.com/

click on the letters archive to see some of there work - the best one to start with is titled "BUSTED"

this is very funny

you can join the forum and ask to be contacted and a person will take it up and send these people on a wild goose chase for many months ......

Another one to watch out for is Rev Jackson Morrison
Had same with him wanting to buy tyres me. Dammed if you reply and if you don't it could be a legitimate sale. I replied with pricing and business name only came back but didn't know if he wanted 3 or 3 sets. Looked on net and came up as scam

A mate of mine had a similar thing happen to him but he was paid from within australia with a commonwealth cheque,it looked legit, pay the transport company with the remainder and the rest was the payment for his ute.put the cheque in his account and the next thing the task force was on his doorstep,it was a counterfeit cheque,in the end it sorted itself but it was close.just be very wary. cheers Paul

I received the same email (almost word for word). I made contact but things didn't feel right so I googled lekan barry.
Your forum thread appeared.
You've probably saved me some dollars so thanks again.
