Oils and Lubes Feedback

Hi Bob, Just checked engine lube specs 20w-50 and 15w-40
API grade SL or Sm multigrade engine oil.

Have another look. In the Toyota manual, theres usually 3 options according to temperature. Nobody needs to use 20W50. The 15W40 is good for hot temps in northern Australia. For the rest of us a 10W30 or 5W30 seems to be the best option for a modern petrol motor, like your RAV.

The trend these days is to use thinner oils because modern engines use smaller oil channels and they lubricate quicker at startup. And you'll use a little less fuel with a the 5W30. I'm not a fan of Penrite oils - the viscosity when hot (the second number), is often thicker than the manufacturers recommendations.

use a 10 or 15w40/50 and not a 20w,too thick for a modern petrol engine.you will have problems with starting and oil pressure problems when cold with a 20w oil,a 10w40 will do the job,if you dont mind spending a bit extra use a semi-synthetic.cheers Paul

20w60 sounds like sludge in a 1FZ-FE. Why use oil thats so thick?

I have, as I said, always used it and never had a problem. I dont like the idea of changing to the HPR15 as it's semi synthetic as a friend whos an engine builder reccomended against changing after so long.

It's happy with the HPR30 so I'll leave it that way. 290000K and no problems yet (touch wood--hand goes to head)

No worries Rob, but Penrite recommend HPR10 for your LandCruiser.
If you use a thick oil on a motor that was released 16 years ago, you're unlikely to get "problems", apart from poorer fuel consumption and increased wear on the top of the motor. I wouldn't touch thick stuff on a modern motor.
