Hi folks:

Just stumbled across this from the ABC News Website:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
New South Wales environmentalists say they have learnt of secret Government plans to construct new four wheel drive and horse trails through the Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

Documents obtained through freedom of information show the State Government is considering increasing access to the area as part of a strategic plan.

It proposes to investigate the feasibility of establishing a system of access permits, accreditation and training programs for horse riders and four wheel driver users.

The director of the Colong Foundation for Wilderness, Keith Muir, says the protection of the environmentally sensitive area is under threat.

"The four wheel drives will cause soil erosion and weed infestation and they're noted in the world heritage nomination report to even be a source of arson," he said.

Opening up any trail into an area usually does lead to weed infestation, often the green smelly stuff that get's people High.... just like forest areas.
interesting Idea - lets open up some more country...and charge people to use it!
National sparks and wild fires closes a lot of traks in winter/ wet weather to minimise damage...

I wonder what the state would charge it's residents?

Just a guess but I reckon the Government has finally woken up to the fact that when you "lock up" areas of land that are adjacent to populated areas the limits on accessability (track maintainance, etc.) become a liability in the event of bushfires. Look at Canberra, the greenies went VERY quiet after that.....
