I need a new tow vehicle - am thinking of the Toyota V8, however I have been told that they go through a bit of oil. Anyone out there with one who can put me straight. Also I am curious as to the fuel economy - will be towing a van 2100 gross.

Thanks.

This is only what a friend passed on to me about his so it's not first hand info.

He reckons 18 or 19 litres per 100ks average towing his 2.5 tonne van.

It did use some oil early but has now settled down

Gday,
Second hand news as well , but I was talking to a couple who had bought one and said they were very supprised with the fuel economy and couldnt speak highly enough of it.
They loved it!!!

Hi. My brother's is coming up to 12mths old and 23000Klm. It used about 3ltrs the first 10000, 2.3ltrs to 20000 and has used about 1/2 litre the last 3000. He has towed a 3.5 tonne van from about 17000k and uses average 25Ltrs/100klm. He tries to keep up to the speed limits so as not to hold up traffic. Says there are not too many hills that slow it down and has touched 110km/hr on a freeway so for the use economy is very reasonable. They really can't fault it as a tow vehicle. Regards, Bob.

Straddie,,,I own a 76 Series V8 Diesel and tow a van around 2.8 Ton. I have done two trips with the van so far with a fuel consumption of 14 L/100Km Average at 90-100KMH. Before buying the vehicle I have to say I was a bit concerned about what the fuel consumption would be. However I have been pleasantly surprised with a general driving consumption of 11L/100Km and was better than that before I fitted the roof rack. I knew about the oil consumption with this engine before I purchased it and am not concerned about it. So far it uses about 400Ml/1000Km and appears to be improving,as a diesel mechanic I understand what is going on in there and know with a bit of hard work it will settle in. Bottom line the vehicle is A1 great to drive and the power is awesome, I could not recommend it highly enough,LOVE IT. Regards ,,Foxhound.

Hi Straddie
I also own a V8 turbo diesel 200 series, purchased in September 2008 so first hand information on performance and towing.
Firstly, there is a problem with oil consumption with most of the vehicles. In the first 6,000kms I used 4 litres of oil and on one 1200km trip I used over 1 litre of oil but surprisingly no oil was used on the return trip and since then after another couple of thousand kms I have hardly used any oil.
Secondly, there is a problem with the tailshaft excessive movements in take offs and sudden braking. Toyota so far has replaced a number of tailshafts for various owners, however, a lot of the others have just been regreased. They are pumping in excessive grease into the yoke to prevent the clunking noise, which must be causing some mechanical damage I think. Some of the ones that have been replaced are still experiencing the problem after a couple of thousand kms.
In regards to fuel consumption, the best I have got on a straight trip is 11.5 litres per 100 that is 25.5mpg but generally I get around abut 12 to 12.5 litres per 100 but I live in a hilly area.
In regards to towing, my caravan weighs approximately 2 tonne and I am getting about 17litres per 100.
In general though the motor is more than adequate to tow your van and the motor outclasses any other 4x4s I have owned and overall I am very pleased with the vehicle.
If you want some more information go over to the www.lcool.org website and there is a dedicated 200 section with lots and lots of information on the questions you have asked.
Regards
The Major
