I agree with the above - I like them so much I bought two of them. Look for a good 1987 - 1989 12HT Turbo diesel Sahara (available in 5 speed manual or auto). Also referred to as HJ61 models they are the very last of the 60 series - the 80 series was released in 1989 as well.
Cheers,
GPM

Different model Landcruisers had different possible issues. If you could give some further info on what models you would be looking at, we might be able to help you a bit more.

Buy a 4.5L petrol 80series - 1992-1998.
Very cheap to buy now because people still think petrol is expensive, and its not.

I second this, there is a BIG difference in refinement between 60 and 80 series. A 60 series is like a truck, an 80 series is like a car which can do what a 60 can offroad.
If you wanted a turbo diesel, then you'll "only" get a 60 series as 80 series TDs are double the price.
Petrol on gas is by far the most powerful, most torquey and cheapest option but diesel gives you the range and availability far out in the outback.
What do you want a landcruiser for? It will make a big difference in what model suits you best.

What Phil said,

And on top of that you could put it on gas.

Look for drive train snatch in this model as they are constant 4wd. (Excess clunks on take off)

Usual used car stuff, straight, no rust, good rubber, long rego, low klm's are all best.

Make sure it has been regularly serviced as per any used car.

Really, buying a second hand 4wd isn't hugely different to any other used vehicle, buy with the head not the heart because the head is attached to the wallet that pays for the hearts mistakes.
