I have to travel to Batememan's Bay on Boxing Day and come home to Melb on Sun, I have always gone the coast road but as I am coming home without the van, is the Canbera route any quicker?

This site reckons it's shorter and faster to go through Canberra.

It depends where in Melbourne you're heading to. We take the coast route but go through Bruthen and not Lakes Entrance and through Maffra to Traralgon. The side roads are quiet and quicker.

Interesting I entered Batemans bay to Melbourne and it directed me via the coast. I thought this would be the the way.

Think about what you said.
You are going without the van. Think about how many vans will be on the single lane, hilly coast road pulling vans.
If you want to go quickly go the Hume. If you want sightseeing and to be stuck behind dozens/scores hundreds of vans go the coast road.

If you do decide to go via the inland route, you don't need to go via Canberra.......

Instead, go up the Clyde Mountain to Braidwood, then Bungendore....where you head across to Murrumbateman via the quiet back roads (all blacktop), then to Yass and the Hume.

Sorry if you already knew to do that......but it'll save HEAPS of time.......

Cheers

When I did it few mths ago heading to Mogo, it was a hideous trip, most of the way was 40k zone road works and cops everywhere, making sure everyone was safe with safety radars

You can bypass Lakes Enterance, but thats about it. Just follow the yellow brick road (princes hwy). its a mind numbing journey...

Truckster

I would have to agree with you, 100%.

Once you start going off the main route, all things turn pareshape (spelling), very quickly. Even if on the day traffic is down to 80km/h, it's still quicker.

Cheers & have a great Xmas !

Roachie is spot on - don't go anywhere near Canberra - go from Bungendore straight to Murambateman via the back roads.
