Mates just bought a new van and wondered about DIY alternatives to Vantec. I have not used CT18 Truck wash, CT20 Wax or Nu Finish so cannot offer any alternatives other than the ordinary car wash/wax that my wife uses on our van.

Comments appreciated.

Yeh , what's the secret. My wife's idea of cleaning is to walk into a room and sweep the room with her eyes.

Boc, Willie,
I just do not see any dust etc on the outside of the cruiser or van, am mindfull that if I clean, 100kms down the road it will look the same, so don't bother.

I appreciate the wifes good points thou, like just before we go on a trip the house is vacuumed, ensuite mopped etc, I use to think we left a clean house for the burgulars, but now realise thats is great to come home to a clean house after 2 or 3 months or a week in the bush.

Yes i must agree , nothing like coming home after a weekend away -- 4 - 5 hours drive in the car with van on back - and the house is clean and has the " new house" smell.....

Tar will stick to anything. Kero removes Tar. Apply Kero to tar with brush or rag and let it sit for a while, wipe off with clean rag - repeat as needed. After - wash car with your preferred product and reapply preferred protector. Cheers Tony

You could apply that paint on stuff that people use on their 4wd's.
Then just peel it off and redo as required.
Should work well on the front, lower sides and roof.
You could probably leave it on the roof permanently.

Peter ,
That would be a bad idea. It looks like crap if you leave it on and also is very hard to get off after a few months.
Willie.

I've never used it, not much point ;-)) but a mate has used it for several years on his Patrol and it has worked very well.
He leaves it on all the time (18 months+) and it comes off easily.
He polishes the truck well before application.
Yes it does look like crap when it gets old but does the job preserving the paint in perfect condition.

I left it on for 12 months and could not get it off in some spots - It is still on in some spots. I did not polish beforehand.

The Company recommends you take it off straight after your trip.

Personally I can't see the need for shiny paint on a 4wd, much easier when it is flat, on the rare occasions it gets scraped off I just touch it up when I get around to it.
Before the Humvee I never polished any of the Toyota's, never took any of them to the panelbeaters to repair dings and scrapes and then either traded them or sold them complete with plenty of pinstriping and dings.
The caravan though does ding very easily, very soft those aluminium sides.
The hardfloor camper just gets treated like the trucks, slap a bit of ferropro on rock blasted bare metal after a trip, patch any holes (was a big one whent he spare fell off the front at 80k on the Birdsville track and tried to get inside straight up through the floor!)
I've even flipped it on its side twice, once at about 60kph and once at dead slow when it would have continued right over if that tree hadn't been there.
As I rarely buy anything new, I do maintain it and use it but don't abuse it. I don't ever get too carried away about appearances but can appreciate that there are a lot that do.
When we get home after an extended trip I just open all the doors/windows etc and blow it out with the airhose, then vac whats left, camper, van, truck all treated the same.

A mate of mine swears that spraying Mr Sheen on the front of his car before a trip is a must....once at the location, just hose off the bugs !!! And it does work, funnily...when I remember.

And instead of using kero, which not many people carry, use WD40. Works just the same

Merry xmas all
