Seasons Greetings to all.

Does anyone know of gearbox seal issues with current Hilux? The usually well-informed BIL mentioned this over Xmas drinks, something about oil leaking between gearbox and/or transfer case, and that there was a fix for it.

Should these fluids be checked at every service as a precaution(I'm away from home at the moment so can't check the service manual)?

Thanks in anticipation.

John.

Hi. Not sure about a known issue with the Hi lux but it is a problem with a lot of 4wd's. The gearbox seal allows oil to travel into the transfer case which lowers the gearbox oil and overfills the transfer oil. It should be checked at each service and if there is any sign of incorrect oil levels it is usually better to have it repaired.Regards, Bob.

John, I understand it has long been a problem with Cruisers and Hiluxes. Our present Cruiser has a 'bypass tube' fitted now, so the oil just goes back - fitted by a mechanic. When our son used to work at a local mine, he said it happened all the time with the Toyotas there.

Haven't heard of this problem before, this problem hasn't appeared on The New Hilux forum either.

Anotherr urban myth.

This was a problem with some Troopys. You can buy the transfer hose mod (including fittings) on e-bay quite cheaply. Same oil in each box so the oil mixing is not a problem. The hose between transferbox and gearbox keeps the levels right in each box.

This was almost universal on LandCruisers built in the 1970's and 1980's. Rarely ever happens since.

Our current Cruiser is 1996 - i thought it was a pretty general problem.

My understanding is:
If your Cruiser is an 80series with the H150F box, I believe its impossible. If its a 75series, with a H55F box, it is possible, but by 1996, uncommon.

The 2 year old Hilux in question runs a R151F box, and I haven't heard of any having this poblem.

dont know about Hilux but land cruiser is helped using the bypass kit which fits between the filler plugs on the gear box and transfer case,if you do pull the box apart and replace the seal take your old seal to a bearing / seal specialist and get a double lip seal as used in auto transmissions.

alot advocate the balance pipe between the 2 but with mine oil went from the higher G box to the lowr TC and last I checked oil doesnt flow up hill so the balance pipe was useless

about every 10k I would drain the TC of excess and top the g box up

Havnt heard of it being an issue for quite a while I thinkit was with older cruisers with a few ks
i doubt the new hiluxes suffer the problem and certainly not for few more years

My 55 and 47series used the pump downhill, like yours.
But my 61series used to pump into the gearbox. I reckon it was because the transfer didn't have its own breather, and the pipe at least stopped any pressure difference.

Very few 4wds under 10 yrs old do it. Happened to me on old 91 Jack, luckily spotted over front of boat and topped up with heavey g/box oil to get home
