Cheap GPS

Hi,

I'm after a cheap basic hand held GPS for camping/fishing trips. This is something to just throw into the bottom of my back pack and use if needed. Doesn't have to be colour or have any bells and whistles. I already have a reasonable set up on a PDA so this is one for those places the PDA shouldn't go.

It can even be B&W but want Aus maps or able to have maps put on it. Would be good to put way points on. I think a collegue brought one from Super Cheap a long time ago for under $100.

Any ideas on where to buy and what??

Thanks for reading.

hi austravel,
i see 30-odd views of this post, with no reply, have probably thought the same.
would be a good idea to state your price range.
your locality, as you could be directed to a local outlet to have a play.
a bit of homework on GPSOZ might not go amiss.
where do you expect to go camping/fishing so people can advise you of the best maps for you.
i don't know of any gps that doesn't have waypoints, it would seem pretty pointless not having that facility.
what is your current set up?
sorry for this ,but you will get much more help if the post contains more info,
cheers

Austravel,

You could try on the GpsAustralia forum as well. Any number of helpful people there.

Hi there, If you dont really need maps and just want breadcrumb tracking and distances and things like that, try Ebay for a Uniden 501. Portable and comes with a windscreen bracket for a vehicle.. about $120 or so.!! Has heaps more functions and you can put in your own GPS co ordinates to get to where you are going,, Good Luck ! Austravel

We have a Garman E trek Legend, in black and white. Got it some 5 years back.

But try this site click here

I like it, but its not real fancy. No topographical stuff either, 64k of memory, b & W. But I can do the bread crumb trail thing, which I then download onto my "puter" when we get back.

See no reason to change, after all 1/2 the fun is trying to figure out where the hell you are, and I am trying hard to resist becoming one of those " guess what I have on my windscreen " people ..
I suppose one day I will get one, but not in the next 5 years

Cheers
Bucky

hi, i have bought one on ebay for $120 and it works really well and came with two maps, i have also just tried to buy one off ebay (from a different person) and paid for it and paid extra for express post and it's been 2 weeks now and still haven't got it, so be careful!!, any way i bought a gps from mitre10 on christmas eve (to replace the one lost on ebay) and they had 2 sorts a Voxon for $138 and a navtrack (i think) for $178, i ended up buying the Navtrack one and it seems to work very well and we are totally pleased with it. hope that helps from chris.
