Hi all, Hope you are all having an excellent christmas.

Christmas eve was my birhtday and i got given a GX600 VHF marine radio.
Another friend gave me an 27MHz antenna.
Will this antenna work for this radio? or will i have to get another antenna?
It would be good if there is an adapter or solution to make it suit.

Thanks alot for all your helpful solutions.....

Cheers, Brian.

Sorry no is the answer.

The 27 med aerial is a tuned length for the 27 meg radio nd this means that the aerial has to be tuned with a SWR meter to the length of frequency of the 27 mghtz band at ether half or full wavelength - in order to transmit from the end of the antena and not bounce back down the wire and destroy your transmitter.

The VHF is different and utilises a different type of antennae - while they both look like a "whip aerial" they aren't the same.

You need to get the shorter VHF type antennae for your vhf radio.

I have longer ones on my vessel and a shorter one on the bull bar of my tow vehicle....sometime's it's handy to be able to talk from the vessel to the vehicle backing the trailer into the water for recovery etc.

I guess you know that you need a MROCP to transmit legally on a vhf marine radio huh? (Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Prroficiency).

Best of luck with it your local boat shop should have the VHF antennaes in stock - they are around $100 from memory.

Cheers

Flywest is right about the radio licence. In Qld you must/should obtain an MROCP licence to transmit legally on a vhf marine radio. (Marine Radio Operators Certificate of Prroficiency). I did the qualification through VMR. But I see many brand new boats are sold with a VHF radio included so I reckon not all users would be correctly licenced.

To clarify . . . .

Radio Licencing is done by the Federal Govt - ACMA - Aust Communications and Media Authority - so it's the same Australia-wide.

VHF Marine radios don't need to be licenced, but the operator must be.
