Hi all,

i understand how often you would get this and how frustrating it would be to answer but trying to read through old threads has just left me confused.

Im about to purchase my first 4wd with a budget of $25k. Have been looking at mostly car yards for convienience and have narrowed down my picks to either a patrol or prado. Have found a 03 prado 3ltr turbo diesel for 24k with a good service history but a huge 275000ks on the clock hence the price i guess. It looks imaculate and would have seen very little offroad in its life. Before i spotted that one i was always set on the patrols but get very confused with all the different model - petrol, or diesels and the different sized engines. Just after any advice that yas can offer.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers.

Friend of mine bought an 02 90 series Prado 3ltr turbo diesel manual with 123000Klm on it about 6 months ago. Paid $21000 private sale and he is very happy with it.

Gaday Tycs. What do you expect to do with this 4by? Is it for outback touring, extreme driving, beach use, towing & will it also be your daily driver for commuting? How many kids?

Hey Craig, i live in Cairns and would like to get involved with a club and try to put it through its paces. I got two boys that i get every second weekend and they are a big reason i want to get involved, gives them a bit of adventure and something different to look forward to when i dont have them. It will also double up as my daily driver and do very little towing.

Thanks ya reply.

The Prado would be a good 1st time 4x4 that has a reasonable power to weight for the beach & slippery clay driving you may find around Cairns. With a few mods they are a very capable offroader while retaining respectable comfort & handling on road. Long range tanks give them excellent range for the bigger trips as well. Good parts availability & not a great deal goes wrong with them.
from your breif description I doubt you'd need the larger space & power of the patrol.
Cheers Craig..............

Mates and rellies are happy with their TD and Petrol Prados, not so with 3LT Patrol. 2nd hand 4.2 Lt Petrol (Put it on gas) Patrol or Diesel or TD especially if your towing is also a goer.

Some Landcruiser Diesels do over 500,000Km before any major repairs. Turbos 350,000? I hope mine does the 350 and more, but I would not be paying big bucks for a vehicle that had done 275,000, unless you don't do many K's a year.

Hi

Don't go near the 3.0D Patrol, it's a bomb... Go for the 4.2D

I know someone that just bought a 98 GU Patrol 2.8D with 200Km for $12,000.

Prado's are good, probably better around town than a Patrol.

Goodluck

Hi
A Toyota dealer in the town where we live has lots of Prados in their yard. Their best buy is a '05 TD auto Prado, 80,000kms, one owner for only $34,000. The hard times in the country mean that they are dropping there prices to at least have a turnover.

Cheers

thanks for the quick replies, they all help. As i said i had my heart set on a patrol until i saw the prado sitting there, patrols always seemed good value to me so thats why im a little torn now. The appealing thing for the prado sounds like you can drive it like a car any other day but the size of the patrol gets a bit frustrating when your not offroad.
My problem is i always go headfirst into things and always want the whole hog if ya know what i mean.
As soon as i get a day off ill take them both for a test drive and see how they feel.
Again thanks heaps for all your comments they will all help me make a better decision.

Tycs,

Wipe out the 3lt Patrol TD, whilst the thing may drive nice in the test drive the question of "for how long?" has to be asked. The reliabilty hangs like a noose around this engine and anyone who buys one after reading and being told of all the issues with them is just crazy in my opinion.

Cheers, Trevor.

thanks for that, the 3ltr TD has come up a bit as far as reliability concerned and they also seem to be the more common for sale. So if i did go patrol i should be looking at the 4.2ltr??? at the moment im driving a skyline that is lucky to get get 300kms to a tank so most things are going to be better than that.

Tycs,

I am not suggesting one vehicle over another but if I were you and going to buy a Patrol it would not be the 3lt. I have 2 x GU 4.2TD and both are very good workhorses. You cannot mix economy and Patrol in the same sentence unless you are talking about the 3lt, both the 4.2TD and 4.5 Petrol (and the 4.8 for that matter) were never considered to be fuel efficient. I really struggle to get 7km/lt out of either of mine even when empty. You can however expect to get big km's out these engines (4.2TD, 4.5 and 4.8 petrols) so if you plan on keeping it for a long time then the Patrol will work out to be a good choice. I have nearly 400 thou on one and 170 on the newer one and have only just recently had to spend money on the older one for items that have worn out (alternator, w/pump and a/c pulley bearing). Other than this all money spent on these vehicles has been for oil changes and fun bits like turbo mods and gear to make em go harder offroad.

Ask to get a lift in one of the club drives if anyone has a spare passenger's seat and get an idea as to which sort of terrain you would be happy to put your own vehicle through and see how easy the different rigs do this sort of terrain, make a decision from this. The Prado will eat up most situations most people would be happy to put their vehicle into offroad and still be much better than the Patrol onroad. The long touring range of the Prado may suit you better for trips like the Gulf and the Cape (both on your doorstep you lucky mongrel ;-))

Good luck in your quest.
Regards, Trevor.

I have a 3lt Patrol that sees more than it's share of dirt (and rocks, sand and mud) and it does everything i need of it (but could use more grunt down low). (that said, I don't think I'd be buying a series II 3lt)

I have also spent lots of time in Prados and they are a very nice little 4by.

It comes down to your needs. In the truly rough stuff, the Patrol will leave the Prado behind, however the other 95% of the time the Prado will keep up, or leave the Patrol in its dust (esp on road).

If you can get a clean 4.2 patrol with low-ish kms then it would be a good buy, they are, however very difficult to find (and for a good reason).

good luck with your hunting

cheers

Dave

G'day Tycs,
Just check it is not a second hand import from Japan. I have heard that parts are hard to get for those imports.

Yes,it should have australian compliance plates stamped on the body somewhere, most likely in the engine bay.

But I dont think thats imported. The laws changed a few years back and even then you could only import them when they were 15 years old
