There were 42 bunkers located at Towers Hill in Charters Towers during World War 2. They were used by the RAAF for the storage of munitions, including bombs, ammunition and parachute flares.

In July 2001 it was announced that the RAAF and the Charters Towers Council were going to turn the overgrown area into a tourist location. One of the 42 bunkers will be turned into a museum.
The RAAF will donate memorabilia for the museum. There are about 20 different mine shafts around this hill which were still filled with ordnance after WW2.

Not sure why the Google map link is showing Ballarat as the location??

The plane and its hanger are located in Werribee Victoria.

Cheers

Geoff,

Grey hair is hereditary, you get it from children. Baldness is caused by watching the Wallabies.

G'day Doug

If you come south looking at B24s, you'll find one scattered over a hill in the Kroombit Tops National Park. It's about 2 hours south west of Rockhampton, via Calliope. Reading the plaque at the site, it's a very sad story...

The bits are a little scattered, particularly after the Americans sifted through the site. Other parts are in remarkably good condition.
