Hi all, does anyone know anything about the Goldstream Caravans? I have been looking at them and the dealer says a Goldstream off road with independant suspension is capable of travelling to Cape York. mmmmmmmmm what do you guys think.

I'd say no! I took a serious look at the Goldstream 2 years ago (pop-top trailer like the Jayco's) and found them to be a much better quality unit than the Jayco's. Their construction and suspension are measurably better but then you pay $8K more than a Jayco. Their "off road" unit (and this is my opinion only)would take the dirt and gravel roads well but as for the Cape, now that's an entirely different beast.

Cheers Mick

I bought one with offroad air suspension about 8 months ago. It is a Strom RL. I love it and have towed it to lots of places inc the high country. Also the Dealer I got it from AJ Thomas in Caulfield Vic have photos on the wall of owners on the GRR and Bungle Bungles etc etc. They are very tough and speaking to a few owners before I bought everyone was happy.

The way I look at it, the Goldstream will go anywhere my Landcruiser will go provided:-
turning is not an issue
width clearance is ok
It is not slimey or too steep, it is pretty heavy.

For example when I go in the high country I would not take it on steep tight tracks. I haven't been to the cape yet but would probably leave it somewhere up there and go it sans trailer.

Having said that I think there is a web site somewhere where someone took one in the dry and I think the dealer has a photo of someone up there.

If you do go for a new one let me knwo and I will give you some pointers on ordering if I had my time again. ( eg order the solar install kit even if I wasnt sure - they didn't tell me till afterwards and now I want solar). The air suspension was expensive but it a dream. Best part is you can level the van when stationary with 2 switches he he.

How waterproof is it. When we did the Cape in June last year the Developmental Road had one river crossing where the water was 7-800mm deep. Sorry I can't remember the name of it but it was before the Jardine Ferry.Image Could Not Be Found
Apart from that, provided you've got a suitable tug and don't deviate off the main road I don't see a problem.

Hi JandK,

I have just been through this ordeal - i have spent the past 10 months looking for the right van - taking into consideration the Jayco / Goldstream and the Coromal. The Jayco was ruled out quite quickly due to the build quality - yes its cheaper, but how long do you plan to use this.....I plan to use mine for few years, so the extra spend was well worth it - ......The main difference i found in the Goldstream and the Coromal is the chassis..The Goldstream is not as strong, but because of this, is sometimes lighter. The Coromal is stronger, therefore is heavier...Although i had to travel interstate to find it, I eventually picked up a Coromal 440 Off-Road van that is 6 years old and has everything i will need for years to come.
In the end its a personal choice between what you want / need and what you can afford....

Happy Hunting

Hi all, thanks for your valuable responses. I wish I could afford both an Goldstream/Coromal and a campertrailer. Need to do some more thinking of what I will use the most. If I really needed to get rid of some extra cash I would probably go for the Ultimate. A hybrid of both perhaps. Have a wonderful 2009 filled with fun, laughter and new adventures.
cheers

JandK,

We have just completed you 6 month trip around Australia with a Gold Stream camper trailer and could not recommend it highly enough. It did every thing we could ask of it and more. We did the Cape and yes we did the Telegraph track Gun shot and all. People saw us doing it and said we were mad but it took it all in its stride. With the water crossings all we did was tape up the fridge vents and the door and then no water got in. We have had one little mishap though when we got home the front 2 cables have let go so when the dealer opens up after Christmas we will be making a warranty claim for this.

Hey good on you!!!

Maybe we are getting a little whosey.

28years ago in 1980 we travelled and worked across Australia in a Nissan Patrol soft top towing an old Millard "Capri" caravan. The Patrol had a bench seat, no syncro in 1st, (a 3 speed crash box). Sus bleep on was very poor and kidney belts probably would have been a god send. I must admit we did no "off roading" but in those days the roads, amenties, water and petrol stops were quite a challenge.

Travelling was not common and along with you experience everyone thought we were mad.

Well after the trip we got permanent jobs took up bushwalking with hiking tents and car camping on annual holidays.

Today, I must admit, (although we are only in our very late 40 tees) I would like to be able to cook without my hands freezing off while being emcumbed by my hooded Mont gortex rain jacket.

Buying our campervan is a very very big investment for us and we thought we needed to research our options but you have just rekindled the excitement of "taking things in its stride". Good on you and thanks for the posting.
