Hi All, does anyone know if access to Tully inlet is open? Last I heard it was closed but that was a few years ago.

Cheers Scott

Nah - my understanding is that the management at Wollogorang have ceased operating the tourist business, shop, and petrol pumps. You could give them a call on (08) 8975 9944.

Wollogorang shut down all aspects of tourist-related business a few years back and is purely a cattle station now. They stopped the Tully Inlet access principally due to rubbish left and irresponsible visitor behaviour - that was the word locally at the time. I would presume that they would still do some maintenance on the track for station operational purposes, but doubt they could be prevailed upon to allow any access these days (or whether they are insured for same, etc) . Guess you could but ask. It is very hard to access Gulf coast anywhere between Karumba and Borroloola areas. Is a good track north from Doomadgee, but it is community use only. Tully Inlet Track closed. Pungalina used to take its clients to coast at Calvert mouth, but that is now an AWC property. Seven Emu had access to Robinson River mouth, but last I heard that was very degraded and rubbished and there was a big question over continued access. It is some of the same old story - selfish users ruin it for those who come later: how many times have we heard that and how many great places are now off limits as a result??

Seven Emu has in past allowed vehicles to try to access the lower Calvert, (i.e. travelling east from Seven Emu). Very slow and overgrown track in 2005. However, that eastern part of Seven Emu is now leased to AWC, to be conserved in conjunction with Pungalina,

Tony,
I haven't been up there for a few years. I know that Frank Shadforth, the guy that has Seven Emu, has for years let people onto his place, for a fee. Mostly, I think, they go to the Robinson River section. But there are old tracks that run east on Seven Emu. One of these is the original "Gulf Track" that goes from Wollogorang and crosses the Calvert where Leichardt's party did. Wet season growth and cyclones have near as obliterated many of these tracks. The group that accessed the lower Calvert from Seven Emu in 2005, I seem to recollect, took 3 days to do it. I also seem to remember that Frank charged them about $500 back then to do that bit. Pungalina has, since about 2001, been a tourist safari camp and camping operation, but during 2008 has been bought by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy because it is a unique environment. I read recently (Australian) that Frank Shadforth is leasing the eastern part of Seven Emu - the part that borders the Calvert and runs back along the coast almost to the Robinson - to the AWC. It is quite possible that he will still be allowing campers onto the Robinson etc.as that part will not be affected by the AWC lease.
